Impossible not to mention how great the singles are, Enjoy the Silence, Personal Jesus, Policy of Truth, World in My Eyes...

It's not a flawless album though, the interludes that follow Enjoy the Silence and Blue Dress are unnecessary and just make the album seem less tight. It's still one of my all time favourites though.

I remember being shocked at the time (I was 18 when this was released) that Depeche Mode, a band I'd been liking for five years for their รผbercool synthpop, should release a blues single. That was "Personal Jesus". The rest is history, and that track is still sensational (and much better than the overhyped Jonny Cash cover).

Such a solid album. Also, I maintain that Depeche Mode is one of the few artists whose most popular song is also their best written and produced. "Personal Jesus" is also phenomenal.

Track picks
2. Sweetest Perfection
3. Personal Jesus
6. Enjoy The Silence
7. Policy Of Truth

"Personal Jesus" is tight. I could live without the rest, though I wouldn't call it bad by any means.
