So I'm getting a few albums from the library that I haven't listened to. I'm going to keep it that way until I check them out, but what should I expect?

I'm actually concerned about If You're Feeling Sinister because I don't want to completely forget about Tigermilk, like what happened with On Avery Island.

Please don't

But to answer you OP.

I think Tigermilk is my favourite of there's but IYFS is just as great (in fact they alternate as my favourites pretty frequently). It's got more of a melancholic vibe to it and is slightly less twee. Thematically it's much in the same place of Tigermilk with maybe a slight more focus on societal generalizations. I guarantee you won't forget about either of them.

Girls In Peacetime Want to Dance is more synth/dance pop-y in feel. It has some great songs but it's a pretty flawed album in my opinion. Definitely not in my top 5 B&S releases but boy it's fucking fun to see Nobody's Empire/Party Line/Perfect Couples live.

You should check out Dear Catastrophe Waitress, The Boy With The Arab Strap and the Lazy Line Painter Jane/Push Barman comp as well because those three records are all great and round out my top five.

EDIT: Some people would have you believe that The Life Pursuit is on par with those but they're wrong Razz

If You're Feeling Sinister is incredible, but Girls In Peacetime is okay at best

Dear Catastrophe Waitress by Belle & Sebastian

is their best though Wink

You could do a lot worse than listen to every single song Belle & Sebastian have ever recorded. Girls In Peacetime may not be as good as the early stuff, but still one of the best records of the year, and If You're Feeling Sinister is one of the best of the 90s.

Lazy Line Painter Jane boxset is their best (or, if that's too difficult to track down, the first disc of Push Barman to Open Old Wounds). After that, my favourites are probably If You're Feeling Sinister, Tigermilk, and Dear Catastrophe Waitress, in that order. Girls in Peacetime is shit.

Nah. that's just your opinion man. First time I heard it, I might've agreed. Not to say it's on the level of those first two.

Haven't heard Girls in Peacetime in a while, but I remember it sounding pretty dull and charmless.

iirc I liked "The Party Line" fine, but "Nobody's Empire" was pretty much what I thought of most songs. Just meh. Might try the whole thing again eventually, but those first listens really turned me off of it.

Just listen to everything they've ever done. Maybe leave their latest album until the end though. It's not terrible by any means, but it's the weakest of their discography in my opinion.
