It's worth noting that I've decided to forgo the privilege of repeating any albums or singles in this round. A truly great year like 1978 needs not to repeat anything in this tournament. I'm confident that this fine load of greatness will destroy whatever Mercury has in store for me.

Darkness On The Edge Of Town by Bruce Springsteen
Oh hey. Is this Springsteen’s best album? I’d say so. This is the most consistent statement the Boss ever made. The energy, the storytelling, the passion, everything that makes Springsteen a legend is here without veering into the overbloated territory some of his work has gone.
Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye
You’ll rarely see this one in the same conversation as Let’s Get It On or What’s Going On. Marvin’s last great album is also considered his weirdest. An emotionally charged record centered around his divorce, it’s still sexy, funky, and clearly an influence on D’Angelo’s “Black Messiah.”
Really can't decide. If my life depended on a snap decision I'd opt for '77 simply for the LPs (Marquee Moon, Heart Of The Congos) and the fact I loathe Springsteen. Then again, Jonny's African pick looks like it's worth having a decent listen to before I choose which horse to back. To be fair. Mercury has held nothing back. Even I have a hard to picking 78 against Heart of the Congos, Zombie, Heroes, Talking Heads debut. And the fact that Jocko Homo and Uptown Top Ranking is like salt in the wound considering that the albums they come from 1978.
That said. I stand by my wider ranging collection of choices. The Vis A Vis album more than holds its own against Fela's biggest record. and Black Devil's Disco Club is all kinds of special.

Yeah this is really really tough. 77 is pretty top-to-bottom wonderful, but 78 in all honesty is just as good, the quirkier choices are all really worth a listen. I think 77 personally might suffer from a bit of an old-favorite, been-there-done-that vibe while a lot of the 78 stuff is relatively new and just kind of digging it more at this very moment. Hard to put down an honest vote here.
