Very good album. Abel and Mr. November are pure energy and much as I love their latest albums, I miss their more rocking moments.

This was the first really amazing album from the National, and is the clear start of the sound they are best known for. Boxer and High Violet are both better in my opinion, but only incrementally.

This is their best album, and no one will ever convince me otherwise (though I've never heard their debut...). As good as Trouble Will Find Me and High Violet are, by that point the band had fallen into a groove and, while I enjoy their sound and acknowledge they are great song writers, at some point all of the songs started to sound the same. In a good way, but still they sound the same. This album finds them still trying to find their sound, and while I do enjoy the rockier parts I think the real beauty is in tracks like City Middle and Baby We'll Be Fine, which don't sounds like anything off their later albums. Mr. November is my favorite National song but there are days I think that The Geese Of Beverly Road is better.

Also Boxer is mad overrated.

I think this is the perfect balance between their explorative first two records, and their brilliant, but kinda sterile later output. It's ragged and unpredictable where it needs to be, but really serene in parts.

Track picks
1. Secret Meeting
3. Lit Up
8. Val Jester
9. All The Wine
11. The Geese Of Beverly Road

Damn, this album is fun to listen to. I'm thinking about making it my entry from The National the next time I update my chart. So excited to see them for the first time in June!

Favorite tracks: Secret Meeting, Lit Up, Looking For Astronauts, Daughters Of The Soho Riots, Abel, Mr. November
