Wow! We're down to mostly just total classics. And my favorites of the bunch (Kurosawa's 2) are up against some absolute juggernauts. 🙁 Its okay, never give up, never surrender.
Here are my votes (the ones which are bolded.
3a: Breathless vs. 8 ½ (this is such a perfect matchup to me.)
3b: Life is Beautiful vs. Persona (easiest choice of the 8? Probably. Still I really like Life Is Beautiful.)
3c: The 400 Blows vs. Ikiru (seriously fuck. It's definitely and easily in my mind Ikiru. But The 400 Blows is sublime too. Just isn't as well rounded and engaging and life-shaking as Kurosawa's second best.)
3d: Spirited Away vs. A Separation (I thought for a moment it was close then I remembered I really loved Spirited Away.)
3e: M vs. The Mirror (again close. This comment is getting redundant where once it was merely completely pointless)
3f: Last Year at Marienbad vs. La Jetee (nothing to say of interest really.)
3h: Grave of the Fireflies vs. Amelie (both kind of seem overrated. But, as I'm a hopeless romantic and a rom com lover, I lean Amelie. Plus it's such a gorgeous film. I know I know so is Grave.)
3g: Stalker vs. Seven Samurai (Seven Samurai is maybe my favorite movie ever. I love Stalker too. And I love that the total giants of Kurosawa and Tarkovsky are up against each other. Still, pretty quick vote to Seven Samurai.... please win please win please win) _________________ -Ryan
