Interestingly, this record wasn't only the first major recording project for Michael McDonald. It also brought together session players David Paich and Jeff Porcaro who went on to form the band Toto.
It's a very smooth jazzy and loungy record, a sound they continued to fine-tune for their masterpiece "Aja" album. Their trademark cryptic lyrics are here (You can have a hell of a time understanding what they're singing about. Just assume it's about sex or drugs). Another trademark of theirs was singing light and fun songs with dark subject matter (see the track "Everyone's Gone to the Movies")
The highlight here is "Doctor Wu," which was not a single, but it's probably most well known from the Minutemen cover. Also notable is "Bad Sneakers" and "Black Friday." The rest of the tracks are so-so.

This is a savage record. Smooth Broadway vs West Coast yacht pop arrangements to very mean lyrics indeed. These guys were terrorists. Interesting.

Prior to Steely Dan, Paich and Porcaro had played together on the 1973 album Bitterweet White Light by Cher.... _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

My favorite Dan. Their uniqueness shines here with a perfect blend of jazzy/progressive influence in hard pop/rock tunes with intelligent lyrics. World class cuts include Dr Wu, Bad Sneakers, Black Friday, and Any World (That I'm Welcome To)
