How do you do it, when albums might be separated by decades, completely different genres etc.?

I have an easier time when they're limited by something arbitrary, like they came out the same year, but when I'm comparing across a decade, or across 50 years, I come unstuck.

^^ Exactly. I don't really consider years or decades that much.

I switch scales every few years, but currently I'm running on a pure subjective basis (how much I like them).

Personally I don't like ranking albums in a specific order but BEA forces us to it. Wish we had the option of making tiers/groupings on our charts. For me, I'd make an unordered Top 10, then the next tier would be 11-20 and so on.

Anyway, my methodology for ranking albums? I factor in objectivity (albums that are truly well-made), subjectivity (the ones I really dig the sound of and frequently revisit), and a little bit of nostalgia. But do I think the album ranked 52 on my overall is definitely better than 53, while 53 is definitely better than 54, and so on? Fuck no. I hope nobody on BEA thinks that way. I rank albums on my overall list by whatever feels right, what feels accurate, what feels true to my taste.

I try not to be carried away on nostalgia alone.....for example INXS - Kick, at the time my favourite band and my favourite album, the first I owned on CD, no doubt back then if asked I'd say 100/100, but now, unfortunately I don't think it's dated too well and is in fact not even my favourite INXS album.

When I've garnered enough points on here I intend to create my own chart in a timeline I suppose you'd say and try and list the albums that were important to me at a particular time in my life......it'd be interesting for me if not for anyone else on here Very Happy

I see a lot of lists that are limited to one entry per performer. Might be interesting to see a list limited to one entry per year.

I'm frequently torn between subjective and objective criteria, especially as I move into making my decade charts.

On the one hand you have (mostly) objective standards like influence, importance/cultural impact, longevity, etc... but on the other hand, there are a lot of albums I include due to subjective taste. I'm currently ending up with a mishmash that hasn't proved very satisfying to me so far.

It's difficult, because if you lean too hard on objectivity you end up with the same chart as everyone else, but subjectivity sometimes feels wrong because, even if you don't personally like Nevermind, it's kind of hard to justify not including it in a greatest albums of the 90's chart, as it is objectively one of the most important albums of that decade.

In the end, probably putting far too much thought into this.

Yeah this, never really had it any other way.
