For those of you who love independent record stores, you gotta check this place out if you're ever on vacation in LA. It's incredible. Recently there was a rumor it was closing, but this is a reassuring article.

I'll cry if the LA Amoeba closes. It's a mandatory visit when I'm out in the Southwest.

When I lived there, that was a monthly visit at least (mostly cause of money).

That place is the mecca of music for me. I bought probably 60% of all my music there throughout my entire life.

It's like a Costco sized music store in the heart of Hollywood.

Thank goodness it isn't closing anytime soon. According to the article, even if the building owner doesn't want to renew the lease when it expires, Amoeba still wishes to remain in Hollywood. And why not? I go there all the time and it's always packed.

It's a mecca for me too. Living within walking distance of Amoeba is one of the reasons I chose to live in this neighborhood of LA. I'd be heartbroken if they closed or left. But again, thank goodness they're not. Can't say I've bought 60% of my collection there since I've only lived in LA for three years and already had a big collection before I moved here. But since living here, Amoeba has been my go-to place. And it easily kicks the shit out of every record store I've ever been to.

Walking through Amoeba's doors feels like walking through a time-tunnel 15-30 years back. I love going there to feel like I'm not in 2016 for an hour or so. Sometimes I go there more for that feeling than to buy something. Yet with the collection they have, it's rare I leave Amoeba empty-handed.

Yeah I moved to LA when I was 16, so I owned maybe 20-40 cds thanks to this place called Tom Tom music, but also sadly due to those mail in things in the late 90s... remember those? It was like a music buying club.

So anyway, my family had a record player, but nobody used it, so I took it over when I started going to Ameoba. I was able to find so much good vinyl there and for cheap. Used CD selection was awesome too... so I easily bought about 300 records from Ameoba from about 2001 to 2008. When I go back to visit, I do feel like their used vinyl selection is combed through too often to get anything good (at least last two visits). Had to go to CD Trader up in Tarzana on Ventura to get better finds (used of course for this cheap bastard).

I like how you said if I want to get out of 2016 I go down there. But yes, the vibe when you go in is exactly what an old fashioned record store should be... all those stickers and the such (well on a mega like scale... if you think a record store should be quaint... eh, not quite the feeling).

Do they still do live acts there from time to time?

Seemed like the article said something like it'd be years before their lease is up anyway?

Yup. There's one there tonight.

I read the same thing. I don't where the rumor started that Amoeba was closing, but I think it was this article:

In any case, there doesn't seem to be a reason to panic, not for a long time at least.

I'm unfortunate enough to live in the uk, so all I can do is watch those What's In My Bag? videos with jealousy. I love those videos because it's so great to see what my favourite artists like.

That store is huge, from what I've seen. The biggest music store I've ever been to is a HMV, and that's obviously nothing on Amoeba. Besides, at least half of that store isn't music. I'm proper jelly.

Yeah, that's one of my favourite YouTube segments. It's always really well done and super interesting. Earl had a great episode recently.
