- Post subject: Innervisions or Songs In the Key Of Life?
|
I know there are quite a few Stevie Wonder fans on the site, myself included. I've been a fan of his music quite literally since I've been into music itself. Songs In the Key of Life has always been my favorite of his, and is currently #1 on my overall, but I rank both Songs.. and Innervisions as 100s. I also think it's a crime neither of the aforementioned records are in our overall top 100.
To those that have listened, which is the better record, Songs In The Key Of Life or Innervisions? _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Innervisions by a long shot. Less is more. Extended plays are tiresome. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

I find Innervisions more well rounded. Just my opinion of course. All the songs are very different between them and have an unique feel each.
SITKOL sounds better -production wise- but has less focus IMO. It's very rare that a double album have the tightness of a regular album of course.
I have rated Innervisions 90 and Songs 80. Innerv will make it into my overall 100 no questions with that rating. Songs quite possibly not. I haven't done any chart so far, just rating albums and songs for the moment.
On the other hand Songs got it easy for best of '76 while Innervisions has Dark Side, Quadrophenia , Houses of the holy or Band on the run as opposition in '73.

That's an excellent point. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Selling England also. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Innervisions. Ditto on the "less is more" comment. Because of that I'd put SITKOL more on par with Talking Book in the conversation of which is the 4th best album after Innervisions, Music of My Mind and Fulfillingness' First Finale.

There are some very good songs on Songs in the Key of Life, but it seems as if his inner visions were giving way to an outer celebrity that is considerably less poignant. I begrudge him nothing, however, Stevie is a genuine treasure.

Music of My Mind is vastly underrated. Talking Book is a beautiful record as well. My order would be Songs, Innervisions, Talking Book, MoMM, Fulfillingness. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Very interesting point. I guess in a funny way you can look at Songs as his Use Your Illusion (keeping in mind Songs is a much better record). It's more bloated than the predecessor(s), and has much more of an "experienced musician" feel. Innervisions is more raw and gritty. Innervisions is the record where Stevie talked about the fucked up world, fucked up civil rights injustice, fucked up drug addicts, and fucked up politics, and of course fucked up love. Songs, while in my opinion more consistently musically interesting, is less focused even though I've always viewed it as a concept record of sorts. Songs is the record where Stevie talked about most of the aforementioned topics in a lighter way (aside from the heavy as shit Village Ghetto Land). Fucked up love became beautiful, which to me is also part of SITKOL's charm. I've personally never viewed Songs as less poignant, but they get their messages out in different ways.
I'm glad to see these responses to this thread. These two records have been with me for years and I'm discovering more and more about them everyday. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Living For The City is one of the greatest songs ever written, agreed on that part. How can you listen to that track and not be moved? Probably my favorite Stevie song. But my other favorite Stevie song is As, which along with Another Star end Songs In The Key of Life better than Misstra Know It All ends Innervisions in my opinion. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.
