I figured I’d start off with something interesting to kick off the new ALC discussion threads, so let’s get to it.

Invocation and Ritual Dance of My Demon Twin
Julie's Haircut

My first experience with the Italian art rock group’s discography happens to be an album from this year which caught my ear whilst I was looking through the esoteric end of album rankings on another site and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Mired in krautrock trappings and textures rich in psychedelic trappings, Julie’s Haircut’s new album has been an album I’ve already gone back to several times since its release in February. I am very curious how the community responds to it.

You can, of course, easily find this on spotify and other sources for immediate listening.

I got on their bandcamp to listen to the album and it was insanely compressed bad audio quality. However, I could still tell I liked what I was hearing. I know I've heard of this band before because "Julie's Haircut" is a pretty oddball name, but I don't think I ever listened to their music before. Will have to find a better version to listen to.

Edit: NVM something was wrong with my computer, their bandcamp is just fine. The album sounds like decent modern psychedelia.

Giving it a listen right now, and I'm going to disagree Confused It's not compressed at all. There's some shoddy mixing here and there, but it's reasonable.

But yeah, it's an okay album so far. Very Krautrock-ish, but not exactly fitting in the genre either. Not terribly big on the distortion bits. They feel too harsh for the rest of the vibe.

Couldn’t disagree more. In my opinion, the tonality fits the soundscape perfectly fine and often reminds me of the exciting experimentation that I’ve liked before in other artists’ discographies. I quite enjoyed how the distorted guitar pops out in the compositions, providing an additional dynamic to the pieces.

Given this a few listens now, and overall I like it. Mining the same territory as somebody like Follakzoid, but more varied, less attached to the motorik beat and certainly less trancey, for better or worse. (Well, probably worse in my opinion, as I certainly like this less than the Follakzoid albums, but I think that's more down to texture than those other things.) Can't help but feel that the vocals are a little silly at points (that second track in particular), but not in a way that's overly distracting. I like the bits with sax. I like sax.

Overall, there are moments here I really love (the first track, end of the third track), but it tails off in the second half of the album with one too many songs that really don't go anywhere, or at least don't go anywhere fast enough. I feel like this material would be incredible live, but there's just something missing here. Definitely a solid pick, and better than a whole lot of albums I've heard this year. Good first pick.

I think i would never listen to this album if you didn't picked it.

It sounds really nice on my setup here.

Well done
