I've currently run into a decent bout of free time and need some stuff do outside of my current responsibilities and activities. Basically, I'd like to hear some new albums because I haven't been exploring stuff for a long while outside of the odd recommendation on spotify. I'll listen to anything recommended basically and come back with a response to what I think about it when I listen to it.
Well this came out of nowhere! It's simple, but alluring piano passages combined with found sounds that is magically and movingly transportive. Itโs like stepping into a wardrobe and emerging in a land of unicorns and butterflies ( can you tell I have two girls! lol). The countryside of Totoro essentially springs to life. And you find yourself sunning on a field of buttercups or whatever as warm, peaceful church bells echo in the distance. An overwhelming sense of calmness enters your bones and you believe that magic is not just possible but real. But itโs not overly pretty or overdone. Itโs all very tasteful and not a bit new agey.
It has two distinct sides with side a being incredibly playful and joyful and side b being more on the somber side of things as the day comes to an end.
Grade: A+. Iโve only been at this a short time , but it is definitely the most unique and alluring ambient album Iโve ever heard. And it immediately shoots to the top of my little chart.

This one was pretty good. Usually albums like this run out of steam within the first few tracks, but the sound was nice enough to get it chugging along. The first 3 tracks were beautiful, but the rest were not quite as good. Overall a good album.
Also, it's the first time in a long time I downloaded an album!.

Check out an ep called Snow Globe by Tiny Little Houses. A lo fi noise folk band who have a debut album coming out shortly and this a fantastic taster. My favourite ep of last year. They have an earlier ep, You Tore Out My Heart, which is also excellent.

โShhhhโฆ.โ She whispered. โYou need to keep it secretโ, she said wide-eyed and with total sincerity. โThe unikitty came last night. I saw him!โ No album captures the world through my childrenโs eyes quite like this. A world where bunnies hop around the world hiding dayglo painted eggs under furniture and place neatly laid-out chocolate kisses & gumdrops in little baskets. This is an album only could have sprung from Iceland. If Bjork and Sugur Ros had a magical elven daughter, this is the album she would make. Where the sunlight sparkles off of melting glaciers as they gather into bubbling brooks. The whole album bubbles and percolates with the magical sounds of the forest. Where wood sprites still live and can and do protect us from all sorts of dangers. And if you listen closely, you can hear the laughter and giggles of children.
But most importantly it captures how children see the world. It captures their faith. Their trust. Thereโs an undying hope that springs from these songs. It fills the air. That everything is going to work out and that the world is a magical place. A world where unikitties and rainbow unicorns exist and have the power to make Daddy all better. I believe in this world. I believe in this magic. Because I have seen it. Seen it in the eyes of my child.
Grade: A+. This is a magical album that really is the love child of Bjork and Sugur Ros. Check it out if you donโt believe me. Because itโs the truth. Itโs an album that could only have sprung from the heart of a child. Itโs ethereal and beautiful. It doesnโt quite fit into any neat categories straddling the lines of post-rock and indie electronica. It doesnโt need to. And it vaults all the way to number one.
