Much like the Elvis 2nd to None disc compliments the "only #1 hits" gimmick of ELV1S, this album (as the gateway to the Beatles for many listeners including myself) could have used a companion piece in order to be a more definitive 2-disc collection of their best songs. Oh well, there's always the Red and Blue albums if you're into compilations. For the most part I'm not, with the exception of the aforementioned Elvis and other older artists who released more singles than albums. For the Beatles though the studio albums and Past Masters are all I need.

Yes, this is pretty redundant unless you are the most casual Beatles fan. Less interesting, even, than that mash-up album of Beatles songs ("Love") that got made a few years later.

I like 1 I feel it is a pretty good compilation but with one glaring omission -

Strawberry Fields Forever.

If they had to choose one track off that double a-side, which was number one in America but not the UK, I think Strawberry Fields is a better track than Penny Lane. But the latter is more radio-friendly and more of a straight-forward pop song. So that's probably why they chose it.

It annoys me though cos Strawberry Fields is my favourite Beatles song.

Thank you - rant over lol.

By concept it stuck to the formula of the songs having to have reached #1. So, there are always going to be favourites that are missing.

I bought a copy for each of my kids, because a single disc compilation is enough for their attention spans. My little girl was a bit disappointed that there was no "Here Comes The Sun", though.

It's also worth noting that there are two versions of this, the second one has remixes or remasters, I think.

Although half of these songs were on their studio albums, this compilation is still worth buying because of the songs that weren't, including "From Me To You", "She Loves You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and a little masterpiece called "Hey Jude".

Somehow I prefer the red and blue albums better than this compilation. Dunno if cause that was my childhood or if they are better/have more songs, but... yeah. They also "perfectly" split their career into their different creative "styles" if you will.

There was about a two year stretch when I was in elementary school where I listened to this every night before bed. Probably part of what burnt me out on the band so quickly. But all things considered, this is a fine compilation with songs that have really stuck with me in a profound way.

Track picks
2. From Me To You
6. A Hard Day's Night
8. Eight Days A Week
16. Eleanor Rigby
20. Lady Madonna

Or you can just get Past Masters so you have all of them plus great tunes like "I Call Your Name" and "Don't Let Me Down". As mentioned multiple times it's good for getting a newbie or a kid into the Beatles. But then if you're a normal person and like them eventually over time you buy all their material and "1" can go in the trash.
