What happened to the Various Artist Compilation format? The 80's and 90's had tons of badass stuff like these.

0161 by Various Artists

Rat Music For Rat People by Various Artists

United Mutations Lo Recordings Vol 3 by...us Artists

Facing The Wrong Way by Various Artists

It just doesn't seem like these kinds of things exist anymore. I'm probably just not looking for them.

Clicks + Cuts and Staedtizism come to mind, and Substance 1987 and Anthology of American Folk Music (in fact, most folk musics are exposed through great compilations (I <3 u, Smithsonian Folkways))

Clicks + Cuts is awesome. I just recently found out that they're all the way up to Clicks + Cuts 5. I thought there was only two of them. Imagine my surprise when I found out there's 5. Can't wait to listen to em.

You know what kind of compilation I always thought were the best? Label samplers. Nowadays they're usually just promotional only, but at one time record labels used to put out regular releases of samplers. Big labels, small labels, Punk labels, alternative labels, reggae labels, disco labels, foreign labels. I had all kinds of shit. Most of them you have to get at the used CD store because they were just promos. And they were usually stamped "Not For Resale" or "promotional only" . Heh heh. But it's amazing how many of them were pretty good. It's a good way to find out about types of music that you don't know shit about.

Now That's What I Call Music by Various Artists

Now that is what I remember as a good compilation when I was a kid. It has no cool points but its great fun

PS I hope this is the British album and not the American one as they are very different albums, different decades too I think. I am sure the U.S, version is great too but I am on about the UK version from 1983, I think.

Yes! It was the right one!

PS I found this very NOW 1 on vinyl last year for £3.00. In good nick. You can pay at least 10 times that for it on Amazon, for a decent copy. Was well chuffed!

I think the NOW albums are up to Volume 30 or something now. They were really popular for some reason. When I was a kid they had something called K-tel albums. And they used to advertise them on Saturday morning TV. Like while you were watching cartoons. I had a shitload of them. At the time I thought they were totally awesome.
