- Post subject: You know what's depressing...
|
On the forming band websites, there is next to no one who has simular influences. And the ones that do have something like 8 years experience doing their thing and are the same age as me if not younger
Maybe I'm not looking further afield. With the internet, anyone with access can start creating music with anyone else and let experimentation run wild.
Has anyone else found it impossible to find others to play, let alone forming a band? Is it me being too rigid with what I want? Anyone who can sympathise with this problem?

I know what you mean. The whole reason you go to a website like that instead of forming a band with friends is the hope that you can get people with similar music taste. Maybe you could try forming a band with people with influences maybe kinda different from yours just so you get the experience. ZOut of interest what do you play?
I'm going to be forming a band sometime around this time next year (*fingers crossed* that's the plan) and I will be the one advertising rather than looking to join someone else as by that time i should have a good idea of the direction I want to go whilst at the same time have music established (It's called having creative control from the get go!). So if anyone plays an instrument (at whatever level I'm not picky about technique I just want passion) and wants to form a band sometime in 2012 (before the world ends right?) and likes the sound of my stuff (No, not the track i just posted) let us know I will have enough money by then to up and leave this town and start somewhere else if need be so you don't have to be from Perth!

I know how you feel and have been there many times
Not only is it hard to find the "right" people to be in a band, but I have found it even harder to KEEP the band together.
I just wanted to say that there is another side to the "same influences" factor that you mentioned.
Some of the greatest bands were ones who came from different sides of the tracks. IMO the more different the musical tastes of the musicians, the more interesting the music will be. Maybe not the best example but, consider McCartney and Lennon. Two very different personalities but when combined the whole was greater than the sum of it's parts.

The best places to form a band are either in high school or college; typically a larger amount of aspiring musicians with bright ideas, zealous excitement and acne.
Of course, a lot of people I know who want to form bands are just too rigid, and with an attitude like that you'll never be able to work with others creatively and you're better off doing it all on your own. I was in a band last year that had a frontman who was a huge Nirvana fan, but all he ever wanted to play was Nirvana, and all the music he wrote just sounded and played exactly like Nirvana, so the rust of us all just quit on him and left to pursue other projects. Same thing happened in another band we were close to, only that one involved a totally jazz-crazed guitarist.
You have to make sure you're own taste isn't too restrictive and that you're open to other genres, while you also have to remember that it doesn't matter if the people you pair up with have the EXACT SAME INFLUENCES that you do, because in the end it's those little odds and ends they bring it in that will help you forge a fresh, creative sound. _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.

I'm in
And we have some very nice outdoor venues in Greenland
Well, as I'm sure you know Jhereko, the real power and control (and profit) goes to the writer(s) of the lyrics. I understand what you are saying about "wanting creative control"
Hell, DON'T WE ALL
But, more times than not, I have found that does not work very well.
I have been in bands where one individual would make all the decisions and even tell the others what and how to play. Yes, McCartney did that to Harrison, but Harrison was extremely humble and well, he was friken Paul McCartney for Chrizzakes.
I have had the most problems with lead guitar players and lead singers. Bastards.
Give me a great rhythm section and I'm good to go
But the guitar players, especially when they are very young, are hard to hold on to and keep in the band.
My point is this. IMO it works best when the WHOLE BAND gets in on the decision making. It keeps them happy and they will not leave your band every time you turn around and try to form their own band so that they can "have creative control"
Then just do what I do.
Just make sure that you have the control of the final cut and mix and get what you want that way

No, Jhereko, come to Canada! Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, all great music cities with great music scenes.
We have everything you could possibly ask for! Fancy money, Tim Horton's, the French and a bipolar, unbearable climate! _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.
