I really love this compilation. In fact, I think it's just as essential as Unknown Pleasures and Closer. I own the 2015 remastered bonus edition, so I have an additional 9 tracks, my favourites being "Komakino" and "These Days".

This compilation is rotten compared to the one called Permanent, yet people seem to prefer this one. I have no idea why. In fact, Permanent is so good I have it in my greatest Best Ofs chart even though I'm not a humongous Joy Division fan. That's how good it is.
If you don't believe me just go compare the tracklists

Is it bollocks. You just prefer Permanent: fair enough, and for someone that's not the biggest Joy Division fan that's no surprise. But to call it 'rotten' is ridiculous. Both the JD and NO Substance compys chronologically presented tracks from singles (As and Bs and EP tracks), and so to that extent can never be classed in the same bracket as the 'best of' you mention. Personally speaking I'd rather have the Heart & Soul box set over both, but then I have big shelves.

Most of those tracks belong in a box set, not on a skimpy 10 track CD where three of the tracks aren't even by Joy Division. That kind of stuff belongs in a box set.

Permanent by Joy Division

The point in this release isn't to compile all of Joy Division's greatest tracks as Permanent is. It's to compile all of the significant Joy Division tracks not featured on either of their studio albums. For someone who already owns both Unknown Pleasures and Closer, it doesn't make a lot of sense to get Permanent since they already own most of the tracks from the studio albums. However, none of the tracks from Substance appear on Unknown Pleasures or Closer (unless you count She's Lost Control, which is a completely different arrangement), so it makes more sense to get that.

Got to think about when it was released. Both the Substances were important releases. To me anyways. Not at the time but maybe a couple of years after. A wonderful intro to both acts.

Not a fan of all of the tracks (esp the 17 song version), however the good songs here are some of the best ever. Makes me said they didn't use some of those songs on their studio albums.
