This is an unusually varied and interesting list among the older Chart of the Day selections, which I have been browsing in recent days.

Although I am anything but a metal fan myself, I do have a strong understanding of the cultural impact of metal in Europe and North America, which is undoubtedly vast. For this reason, I appreciate charts with some metal albums post-1982 – Joe S. Harrington and David Keenan both gave a lot of credit to the early pioneers of metal yet completely neglected anything in the genre after 1982.

More than having some metal, even if not the most cutting-edge bands of the genre, the list also has a great deal of difference genres, from soul (Standing on the Verge of Getting It On), glam (Electric Warrior), trip-hop (Dummy), jazz (Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers), post-rock (The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place), alternative rock (e.g. Violent Femmes), rock and roll (Cosmo’s Factory) and progressive rock (Larks’ Tongues in Aspic). I have rarely seen a list with a balance of all those genres.
