Money For Nothing suffers from serious overexposure, but the two lesser hits that bookend it are still excellent and have stood the test of time rather than being forever associated with the early MTV era.

I just listened to it again yesterday and it's a pretty damn good record, i like every single track in here. Money For Nothing is awesome and Brothers In Arms as well, and i might be minority but i love Walk Of Life and Your Lastest Trick too. And i'm absolutely obsessed with the album cover, one of my favourites.

Anything Mark Knopfler touches is always worth listening to. This album was huge when it came out and still sounds good. I like to compare his music to a bottle of wine, as I get older his music gets better and better.

A near masterpiece, so many extremely strong songs. The flaw which makes it land at no. 2 Dire Straits album (behind Love Over Gold) is that the tracks 7 & 8 are not up to par with the rest and could be considered filler. They are decent songs I guess, but I really hate it when an album has two weakest tracks back to back.

But what more can be said of the title track, one of the most beautiful and emotional songs ever. Guitar work has been praised enough, but I'd like to take a minute to appreciate Knopfler's vocal performance, something he's not usually lauded for. If you take vocal performance as a tool that serves to enhance the song's emotion, then this is one of the greatest vocal performances ever, it perfectly suits the song.

An excellent observation.

Here's how good Knopfler is.

I'm often lambasted for not appreciating vocalists who don't have technically great voices. And to be honest, that's largely a true statement. If I ever hear Neil Young, Bob Dylan, or Johnny Cash again, it'll be too soon.

But I have tremendous appreciation for Knopfler as a vocalist (in addition to as a guitarist of course.... oh, and as a songwriter as well). In addition to having a near complete Dire Straits discography, I have almost all of his solo albums, which are now more numerous than Dire Straits albums. It takes a special talent for someone with a technically unimpressive voice to reach me. Knofler has it.
