Currently Scorpions albums are the highest in my charts with this one as the first:

and the highest non-Scorpions album is fairly recent:

But I think indeed the main wave we non-Germans came in contact with was The Neue Deutsche Welle with bands like Spider Murphy Gang, Fehlfarben, Trio, etc. But my absolute favorite of that movement was Rheingold with songs like Dreiklangsdimensionen and Fluss. But their main album

is still high on my wishlist.
And of course there's Can, Neu!, Faust, Kraftwerk, DAF, Einstürzende Neubauten, Notwist and even Rammstein.
