What I love about Bleach is that it has the strongest sludge metal influences of Nirvana's three albums, which makes sense because the Melvins worked with Cobain a couple of times. If Nirvana continued, Buzzo would have definitely appeared on one of their albums.

“Paper Cuts” is my second favorite Nirvana song after “Hairspray Queen”.

I love how raw the emotions here are and throughout their work. Nirvana is an emotional powerhouse and often undervalued by certain groups.

certainly has more in common with grungy noise rock (Fudge Tunnel, The Jesus Lizard, etc) of the era then the grunge contemporization that they became known for -- might be my favorite Nirvana

While I appreciate the rawness and noisiness, it's still my least favourite Nirvana studio album, mostly because I find the songwriting on the other two albums stronger.

I think In utero was actually less contemporary than Bleach. Bleach still felt like an alternative album, but In utero was very noisy thanks to Albini's precise production and Cobain's hardcore punk and sludge tastes. But I agree that Nevermind was way too pop.

I raise your contrary ideals, and say Nevermind wasn't poppy enough. Laughing

I like all of Nirvana. I know Kurt goes on record saying he doesn't like the production on Nevermind, but he wrote the songs. Change that production to an Albini production and I really don't think it'd be all too different [please don't mistake this as they would be exactly the same, of course not]. (RE: Albini and Scott Litt - Nirvana chose Scott Litt's take on a couple tracks on In Utero). I mean after all endless, nameless closes out the Nevermind album (albeit a hidden track originally)... it's not like too much karo syrup. Also let's not forget that Cobain wanted to be the biggest band in the world. There's a pop aesthetic within punk too - don't believe me put on a Ramones record. Dude thought highly of the Beatles, and didn't discount pop entirely - perhaps many flavors of it for sure, but at it's core, pop is short, "likeable" songs, a lot like punk rock. It's the likeable part that differentiate the "pop" taste I suppose.

It's actually what kind of drives me batty these days about "alternative" radio- it now just sounds just like pop radio stations. Pop radio stations sometimes have more "edgier" music. It's all turned up on its head.

Ramble.

Glavin.
