A lot of the shorter tracks on Blonde have never done much for me, which is the main reason I think the album's a bit overrated. "Pretty Sweet" is nice but still kind of feels like an interlude to me. "Nights" was on my shortlist of tracks I considered nominating but even it wouldn't make me vote against Kendrick here.
"The Blacker the Berry" is probably my favorite song in the tournament. The moment those drums hit is one of the most exhilarating moments in music for me. Kendrick's verses are great but I think Assassin's choruses are what really make the song. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.
Pretty Sweet is a pretty good representive of how I feel about a lot of Ocean's music- strong songwriting, both lyrically and in composition, but the entire performance still leaves something to be desired. It's a nice-enough track, but no contest here. The Blacker the Berry, as clique'd as it may sound nowadays, still hits really hard, and just nice to see a song Be About Something while also not being calculated to avoid offending any potential part of your fanbase in the process (hello, every big Topical Song 2016-onwards).
