Kind of a masterpiece. Everything people said about Lorde's Melodrama is actually true about CTRL. Here, SZA is vulnerable in a way that doesn't feel like she's begging you to feel sorry for her, or to feel impressed by her sense of self-awareness. The stories on this record are frequently unflattering, rife with recklessness and desperation. They're told by someone who feels totally lost and helpless. It's the kind of record of romantic turmoil that takes a thoroughly balanced view of both sides of a relationship, skewing more towards one's own accountability--which almost never happens in any kind of pop songwriting.

This isn't compelling just because SZA lays her feelings bare; anyone can do that. Instead, SZA is describing her thought process, letting the details, which are lived in and painfully recognizable, speak for themselves. Her songs are almost never didactic, nor are they broad. She shows without needing to tell. Not to mention that the songwriting and production are exquisite, often hazy and haunted, never putting form before content. And SZA accomplishes all of this while crafting a seductive listening experience. As raw as CTRL is, it's never daring you to not listen. Rather, it's a mirror where all your worst tendencies and insecurities can be acknowledged and, if not forgiven, accepted as human.

Track picks
4. Drew Barrymore
5. Prom
10. Anything
12. Normal Girl
14. 20 Something
