Not only is this the wrong opinion, but it’s also one that people parrot when they’ve heard maybe two or three Snoop albums and think that qualifies them to speak on what is actually a wide and varied (and, yes, often pretty terrible) discography - with a number of distinct peaks. No Limit Top Dogg and Tha Last Meal might run 10-15 minutes longer than they need to, but they’re both packed with some really sharp, unapologetic g-funk, and definitely deserve a lot more love than they get. No Limit Top Dogg in particular is a really fantastic record - Snoop’s fired up, and there a real tension and fury to the whole thing that makes it feel necessary. Then there’s Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, which just gets better and better with age, a series of crossover attempts and all-star collaborations that actually work, remaining natural and memorable throughout, over a varied but uniformly excellent beat selection. It stands as one of the best albums of its type, probably due to Snoop’s timeless laidback charm. And then there are the more recent retro throwbacks which work as breezy, enjoyable, albeit low-stakes affairs - Neva Left, Coolaid, 7 Days of Funk, arguably I Want to Thank Me - which aren’t vital or perfect or even particularly memorable for the most part, but which still bump and which I still occasionally return to. And I don’t even consider myself a particular fan of Snoop. So yeah, Doggystyle does stand out in his discography - it’s a height he’s never really reached since. That said, to dismiss everything else as bad is unfair. Even when he mostly misses - take Ego Trippin’, home to ‘Sexual Eruption’ and a bunch of other awful ideas - it’s still more fun and more amiable than when other rappers miss. He’s had a surprisingly solid career. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
