  • Post subject: Artists whose solo careers were better than thier groups
  • Quote
Following up from my earlier thread, in contrast I was also thinking, which individual acts produced far better work as a solo artist than when their were in their original group. By this I mean ones that rose to fame as part of a band or group, so you can't mention for example David Bowie (as despite being in a couple of bands beforehand he first gained attention as a solo act). In recent years, judging by average scores on this as well as public perception, Harry Styles is one example

The first person who came to my mind when seeing this chat subject is Miranda Lambert with her having additional music out there under the name Pistol Annies.

God bless you and Miranda and the other members of the trio always!!!

This is probably a post that results from google or some other personalization scheme I have heard of Elliot Smith and Van Morrison but not Them or Heatmiser their bands were unsuccesful and this post is not reflective of the Harry styles situation the original poster wanted to discuss.

THe order got shuffled sorry this is a good example but michael Jackson solo is not actually better than the Jackson 5 his relatives are life survivors and they put their grit into the music that MJs material is lacking.

Fair enough re Elliott Smith. Personally I think Van Morrison fits the bill as he first gained attention with Them and then went on to record classic albums. Your Michael Jackson argument is purely subjective and if his albums Off The Wall and Thriller are rated higher than any of the Jackson 5 albums then surely he fits the bill. How about Nick Cave?

I will discuss Michael Jackson even though i am pretty sure you are one of the few who have heard of a specific band called them due to personalization or something i dont remember anything about them in my entire life i have trouble remembering anything before the 90s and cannot review outside of google and they personalize so i see a bunch of lady gaga trump debates no one in their right mind cares about for example that is how personalization works.
As for Michael Jackson i am pretty sure that as a site full of rockists the others here willl just dismiss this comment as they dont care about the quality of thriller or even the mass media marketing strategy in the 80s and 90s where they turned everything orange and yellow. THey do not care about the quality of thriller versus something by the Jackson 5 or even Janet Jackson. As for the charts it is not true that this chart is an indicator of quality as there are other charts such as by magazines like people as a simple refutation.
Music is not subjective, it is constructed by rules varying on culture and it is not always the rules of western music that produces the best results. There are only certain patterns you can make on the paper that will achieve anything at all and when you run out of patterns you have to find new rules and often that means different cultures like Africa or Korea.

Lauryn Hill.

The Miseducation is better than the Fugees albums.

Also Beyoncรฉ of course.

Sting's best stuff is also arguably better than the best of the Police.

It's an interesting topic, since you could probably find more cases of the opposite. Most solo projects don't go that well.
