It was an difficult progression for me, having been a huge fan of them early on. First Rattle & Hum comes out, and I figure maybe they're just a little burned out from all the touring, they needed to try something different, and so on — but either way I don't think I listened to that album more than twice, and I probably wasn't paying attention during that second listen. Then they did Achtung Baby and I thought, "this is better" — still not quite up to the earlier standard, but good. And then this one comes out, and it's "oh dear, they really are into a disturbing trajectory here," even though it was still better than Rattle & Hum (to my ears). And then of course the next one was Pop, at which point I started to wonder why I had ever liked these guys in the first place.

Contrast that to a band like Magazine, for example — three great albums, so you think maybe they're going to be all-time greats over the long term, and then the fourth comes out and it's all over, just like that. I almost have to think that was preferable to seeing a U2-like gradual decline, because you knew it was over almost immediately and you didn't really have to think about what would be coming next. Not that thinking is bad... it's just that timing-wise, this album came out right in the middle of the Shoegaze First Wave (or maybe more like the tail-end) and that was kind of an embarrassment of riches for me, because there was such a huge amount of cool stuff to listen to. Which only made Zooropa seem that much less worthwhile, I suppose.

In 1985, for LIVE AID, the world waited in anticipation for U2 to perform at Wembley stadium. Many commentators stated that they would put on the best performance of all the bands. Well, history has proved that Freddie Mercury & Queen would be the best show of the evening. But it wasn’t long before U2 dominated the rock charts.

This album has a lot of similarities to Rolling Stones – Black & Blue. That is to say, it doesn’t get a lot of love. There was a poll on this site, and black & blue was rated last, their worse album. I feel, Zooropa has been pigeon-holed into this same category—relatively unknown album with no hits, sounds and songs that are not typically U2. I've seen these guys play 3x, and not even once, did I hear something off of Zooropa. So, it’s a bit of a dog’s breakfast.

Is the album, hard or heavy rock? No. Is the album going to make you crave for more? I'm not sure. I read somewhere, that this album was created from all the “left over” songs after Achtung Baby. What I enjoy about this album is listening to the band perform Lemon, with Bono stretching his high-pitched vocals. Or Babyface, or Zooropa, or Numb. All these songs, I could never have predicted, that they were produced and played by U2. Just doesn’t sound like them at all. “Stay” sounds like U2 and it could be on any one of their albums. So, what I love about this album is the originality and somewhat playfulness. Its unlike any U2 material.

Is this their defining moment? Not at all, but it does give you a change in their musical style.

I would give this album 8/10. Its not great but its very good!

One of my favorite albums from U2. In my opinion, it's very underrated compared to the rest of their catalogue.
