Grow Like a Plant is pure fun. And it's instrumentally interesting as well. Wouldn't expect anything less from Saunier of Deerhoof fame. Impossible to dislike, just look at that video lol. Leavin' This Holler is pretty good as well, but it doesn't make me grin.

grow like a plant:
  • psychedelic, hypnotic
  • catchy
  • crazy guitar riffs
  • eccentric, chaotic
  • relatively raw

leavin' this holler:
  • strong melody
  • beautiful vocal harmonies
  • solid lyricism (see: "i know that i've got love to give, but i ain't got time to kill")
  • super-polished

Not one to complain about a 5-minute song, but not sold Leavin' This Holler needs to be that long. Sonically, it's kinda dull. Some decent lines here'n'there though.

Grow Like A Plant is definitely the more interesting cut, but I feel like it could've benefitted from a bigger sound. Would love to hear Animal Collective or even MGMT take a swing at it. Either way, it gets my vote.

It'll obviously never happen, but I think there's this weird possibility each artist could perform the other's song better. If Saunier covered Leavin', it'd be a bit rawer and have that emotional tone it craves, and if 49 Winchester covered Grow Like A Plant it'd be more of a colossal hoe-down.

Nice to see Saunier still going strong more than a quarter of a century into his career. Solid countrypolitan tune from Winchester. Neither quite reach their full potential, but Grow Like a Plant is more fun and for now that's what I'm going with.

49 Winchester has been one of my favorite country bands for some time now (I'm actually wearing a 49 Winchester shirt as I type this Laughing ) I had to include a track off their newest record. There's songs like Anchor and Fast Asleep that might have been more impressive for the tournament but there's something about the somberness of the vocal performance and the almost psychedelic electric guitar that I just love on this track. I definitely see the criticism of the song being too long for what it is but I play this song so much the length doesn't bother me. Love the music video too, I think it really adds to the emotions of the track.

I'm not a huge fan of Deerhoof and this Greg Saunier solo track just doesn't do it for me either. Gotta go with my pick here.
