[Ok, the last topic i started was too inscrutable to make sense whatsoever, so i'll try another topic...]

i'm a huge, avid music listener. i've had song lyrics memorized since i was 3. i've written over 1000 of my own songs. my music library comes in around 30,000 albums. my name in college and thereafter has been synonymous with (new) music.

I think part of my enjoyment of listening to music is the discovery of "new" music, at least new to my ears. (remember the nbc tv slogan of about 10 years past -- along the lines of "if it's new to you, then it's a new episode"?) And as i've discovered "new"music over the years, my tastes have undergone significant shifts. Moreover, i've noticed that these shifts have occurred at about 6-to-7 year intervals.

And since another big shift should be coming to an ipod near me soon (circa 2013), i thought i'd open this thread up to ask fellow BEAners what your significant shifts in musical tastes have been over your lifetime (?) and if you've noticed a similar pattern. Here's mine, as an example:

1981: pop
- Prior to this, i was raised on country (kenny rogers & crystal gayle, for example) and r&b (commodores & jackson 5, marvin gaye for example).

1988: hip-hop
- I started going to high school dances and had the most fun dancing to the hip-hop pop tunes.

1994: alternative / grunge rock
- Being in college, everyone listened to this so i wanted to do my own thing. From 1991 on, i listened more to pop/hip-hop while friends ate up pearl jam, alice in chains, etc. i didn't really start listening fully until cobain's death -- dying on my bday, i took that as a sign since nirvana was really the only alternative artist of the time i really gave a chance, and suddenly that one i liked was gone. )

2000: indie
- thank you n@pster for allowing me to taste a whole palette of music, especially the world of indie. thank you for a multitude of discoveries i never would've discovered armed with just a radio and CMJ subscription.

2007: IDM / indie dance music
- I heard "give up" by postal service in 2003 and liked that, but didn't really start loving IDM/dance until around 2007. I include "organic" IDM in this category, including !!!, whose "myth takes" dance punk album in 2007 probably pushed me over the edge into dance (at the time, my #3 of that year). The next year, hot chip's "made in the dark" was my fav album. Now i consider lcd soundsystem, daft punk and basement jaxx albums as some of my favs.

2013/2014: ???
- i expect i'll start liking boring old person music like the sound of dogs sleeping beside a calm, small-town pond slurping my prune juice.

That's interesting. My music tastes never shift quite that drastically. It's usually pretty gradual, and even then it doesn't change all that much.

In 1996 I listened almost exclusively to the Space Jam OST.

In 2001 I was listening to Shaggy, Jay-Z, Eminem, Linkin Park.

In 2003-4 it was The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Libertines, The Hives, The Coral etc.

In 2005-6 it was Pavement, The Flaming Lips, Weezer etc.

In 2007-8 it was mainly reggae and drum'n'bass.

Now it's psytrance. Only psytrance.

Alllllll the way up to 12: Rock

I barely listened to anything until the age of 12, if I did it was your average dadrock (Queen, Sabbath)

12 - 13: Synthpop + Rock
Went on a huge synthpop kick as well as expanding my knowledge of rock.

13 - 15: Prog, Alt & Rap
Started listening to a lot of Prog Rock. Also branched out to Alt, Post-Punk etc... Started listening properly to rap for the first time too.

Pre 1991 - Hair metal and pop rap.

1991 -1995 - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Canadian rock

1995-1998 - Radiohead, Brit-pop, blues

1998 - 2005 - indie, punk, Wilco, hip-hop

2005 - present - much more classic rock material and folk

Funny thing is, this list is cumulative. I still listen to all the previous eras.

I have a big circle of friends that all listen to different types of music and I've always listened to numerous genres since I started appreciating music.I've noticed however that over the last 18-24 months that I go through swings and shifts of preferences towards what music I want to listen to,these are usually 2-3 week periods where I'll only listen to a certain genre. It usually switches between Hip-Hop,Guitar Music and Electronic Music(Yes I know these are all very broad labels but it would take to much effort to list them all).I tend to get bored of listening to the same styles and will switch genres within the above labels.I really just try and keep myself interested in music and not get stuck in a rut of listening to the one type, genre or style as I'd say I have a low attention span.

I did not have much exposure to music growing up. My parents hardly played anything in the house, well, my parents weren't really home often anyway. I was never put in a situation where I was pressured to listen to what was "in" in music today either, at least not until later. So my personal history in music was pretty empty for at least my first 12 years or so.

The first style of music I ever tried was hip hop. It was interesting to me for about a year. I tried punk rock later. Interesting for about three or four years or so. After that I think I had about a three year drought in music, not listening to much of anything ever. Not on my own though, but boy, was there music being played around me. I'd rather not get into the details, but basically... well, there were times where I've been just about forced to listen to hours, sometimes literally 4 straight hours or more, of the "new", "cool" music like soulja-boy, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy, Eminem, Beyonce, and wherever the fuck else was on the radio. Some of the most demotivational music I've ever heard in my life. Goddamn I hate pop music. I suppose this sort of contributed to my lack of incentive to try music. I was just sick of it.

Luckily, I haven't had that situation for at least a couple years now. Randomly, about 6 or 7 months ago, I decided to try researching music on the internet. The indie stuff, the better stuff. I always knew it was out there, stuff that doesn't follow typical music structures, formulas, cliches. I came across BEA at some point, and man, its been a huge help for me. Starting with the overall chart, the decade charts, and then the member charts. Since then, I've been slowly discovering the music I truly enjoy. More recently, I've been trying out rateyourmusic.

Lately, I'm going through a strange phase. Perhaps its due to the over-exposure to pop music. I have a strong distaste for traditional things in music. Verse/chorus is especially tiring for me. I don't like the Beatles. I liked Pixies for about three weeks and now, it doesn't do it for me anymore. The White Stripes, The Strokes, Arcade Fire, The Flaming Lips, Yeah Yeah Yeahs... all boring. I'm even liking Radiohead less than I used to. Basically, I think I'm starting to hate rock music, too.

On a positive note, by far my favorite band so far is this Japanese group, Boredoms. I was introduced to them through yepyepyep's chart. Boredoms represent a certain anarchy in music. Music that goes beyond all the rules, and just plain outright doesn't give a fuck. It's difficult to describe just how refreshing they are to me.
