I have this theory that along with Bob Marley and Johnny Cash, most music fans have at least some appreciation for Tom Petty. When I would meet someone or make friends with someone in the 90's, I would usually sort through their CD collection, and I swear even if I didn't like most of their collection, there was a always a copy of Tom Petty and Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits in there somewhere. But the same was often true with people who had collections I admired and enjoyed greatly. So I have this theory that Tom Petty is sort of the meat and potatoes of rock n roll (unless you're a vegetarian) Laughing and that just about every music fan enjoys him on some level. As for me, I have the Anthology on my Ipod and mostly listen to him when it's on shuffle. Some of those songs are just classic rock n roll songs that never seem dated. Anyways, I'm curious. What does the BEA community think of Tom Petty?

I really appreciate Tom Petty. He's what I'm looking for when I want something simple. The epitome of non-pretentious, yet still quality work. Full Moon Fever and Wildflowers are great, but his earlier work is worth it as well.

Sounds like you're in the middle then. I think he's one of those artists that best of compilations were made for, although I agree that Wildflowers is a pretty solid album. Full Moon Fever is good too. I'll admit I haven't heard most of his regular catalog in its entirety though. (Big fan question): What other regular catalog albums of his are worth picking up?

I couldn't name one of his songs or tell you it was him if one of his songs were playing. So I guess I abstain. Perhaps I'll seek some out to listen to...perhaps not, doesn't really seem like my thing.

Interesting. That suggests that maybe he isn't an international star. Think

Tom Petty is pretty uncool, but not as uncool as R.E.M. Surprised

but seriously he's average, I can only listen to his songs and like them if they're peppered in a very long playlist for a very long roadtrip. The two albums I've heard are so mundane it gives me a headache when I try to listen all the way through (Damn the Torpedoes, Full Moon Fever)
