what makes music pretentious, and why does it matter if it is? _________________ "I would expect something wrong with the poll if the chart favorite was not the poll winner" - naples 12-8-11

Personally I found Oasis so pretentious I just never got into their music. They should have taken a page out of John Lennon's humble book. He said he even hated his rock and roll.

What makes them pretentious? I've never understood how that term have any correlation with music.

I could list many but will just go with this quote from Noel. "We're not arrogant, we just think we're the best band in the world."

In reality, that quote pretty much sums up every band in the world. And it should. If you don't believe that you're good enough to get to where you want to go, you're probably not going to get there.
Lennon could say what he said about hating his rock and roll because he was already there. Earlier, The Beatles were heard to say that they were going to "the toppermost of the poppermost". Were they being pretentious? Or were they simply saying what they wanted to do?

I think there is a difference between saying the toppermost of the poppermost and we just think we're the best band in the world. All I know is I never heard Michael Jordon say that he was the greatest basketball player in the world. I never heard Wayne Gretzky say that he was the greatest hockey player in the world.

Yeah, when I think of "pretentious", one album stands out to me above all the rest:

True. Jordan and Gretzky never said that. But then again, they didn't have to. Before they ever stepped onto a professional arena, they had already been annointed the kings of their sports.
It may not be the coolest thing in the world to say, but I understand why people do it. But the bottom line, for me anyway, is this: I don't care what someone says about themselves, or how they act, or what they do to draw attention to themselves. For me, it's the music. Was the music of Oasis pretentious? I don't think that it could be. And that's all that counts. Let them be douches. It's the music that matters.

I don't think music can be pretentious. I think musicians can be pretentious, and certainly some fans can be...but not music itself. _________________ <(: @ >
