free market theory says that individual consumers will intelligently evaluate their production and consumption options, then make an intelligent decision to produce those things that provide the greatest profits (by indirectly providing the greatest benefits to others) while purchasing / consuming those things that provide the greatest benefits to themselves. In theory, it sounds downright elegant, but in practice, there's a huge problem with all this: Consumers are not rational!

Any thoughts on this guys?

Capitalism is my preferred system. It may not be perfect, but out of all the alternatives, it is the most perfect.

The rationality of consumers is also not only subjective, it's entirely irrelevant.

I'm a Marxist. I have written at length about my views quite a few times on these pages before, so I can't really be bothered to do so again. But yeah, capitalism is bad etcetera etcetera.

Capitalism is probably best, but it needs guidance from time to time from informed, deliberating government.

...and we need to realise that sustainability is more than a catch phrase, and isn't the antithesis of prosperity.

From what I've seen, capitalism gives the middle finger to the environment while also creating markets that shouldn't even exist. But comparing it to Soviet socialism and general dictatorships, it's a goddamn miracle. Better yet, though, is intelligent government intervention combined with capitalism. Not saying my country is that perfect example, but we do get by better than most, and while I get pissed of at our government at times, overall I can't think of any better systems than what we have here. Ideally, though, I'd like environmentalism (that's a word, right?) to be of utmost importance in all nations around the world.
