Fantastic album! I was surprised to see that it was from 1972 when I first heard it.

If you don't like this album you're most likely dead inside.

It's well-written and all that, but my God is it boring.
Sorry, Puncture Repair, I guess I am dead inside.

I have the most problematic relationship with this album. Even more problematic than Kanye and Kim's.

Best album ever or close IMO, and at least best folk album ever. Heartrendingly superb.

It's #3 on my chart, and it's entirely interchangeable with #2 (Forever Changes), so I think that says all I need to about what I think of this album. Simply superb, and utterly beautiful. A perfect example of the economy of good music. One man and a guitar, writing simple, minimal songs, with little fanfare and no filler. As perfect as an album can get IMO.
EDIT: I've just been reminded of something I see and hear a lot, thanks to someone naming this as the "saddest album ever" in another thread. I often see this album labelled as "bleak" or "sad", but I think it conveys real hope, particularly musically. Obviously, in context, it's pretty sad, and some of the lyrics were obviously written by a troubled guy, but the album as a whole has always struck me as really uplifting. I understand I'm probably in the minority there though.

Well, I like the album, so I'm not dead inside. But I agree with swedenman that it's quite boring. It would've been better with some strings, vocal harmonies, some kind of overdubs, etc.. Sometimes less is more, but in this case less is way too little. Also, I don't find the melodies particularly interesting. Pleasant album, but I always feel very drowsy when I'm listening to it. _________________ "The Beatles, the greatest band known to mankind." - Bismah Mughal
