I haven't actually listened to this album yet, although from what I have heard by our dear friend Marvin here, I think I'll probably like it.

Amazing, though I prefer Here My Dear and maybe Let's Get It On.

maybe the BEA forums needs to ask itself this
(kidding)
This album asks a simple question and chooses to describe and offer hope for all the chaos that's "going on" rather than just give a simple, pat answer. A masterpiece in a class all it's own.

Marvin Gaye is definitely my all-time favorite singer and the way he soars in the title track and Save The Children is an element alone that solidifies this personal perspective of mine. As Saoirse pointed out better than myself, the task of describing the dark side of the early '70s America, a country with its society torn apart, severely hurt and disheartened by the outcome of the Vietnam War which was foreseeable by then, while I've heard comments around the web about the simplicity with which this situation is described is somewhat dated for today's listeners, it's told in such an earnest and emotional way that puts any criticism on behalf of me aside. Besides quite some famous singles of the genre, I'm not going to pretend that I have discovered so far a lot of soul music, but this is a terrific album, gentle (regarding its smooth and beautiful sound) and desperate (regarding the issues it deals with) at the same time. I don't care about its religious themes, but they cover little amount of this work, and considering the songs including them are still musically interesting this couldn't bother me less. My personal favorite is Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), but all the singles are equally amazing, truly.
