This thread is for examples of the best songs that were parts of ongoing musical feuds. For example, Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" in part to respond to Neil Young's Dixie put-downs "Southern Man" and "Alabama." (The joke was wasted on Young, who later said that, when he heard his name in the Skynyrd song, he thought it was "pretty great")
My own favorite comes from the skirmish between the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls. The Pistols' manager, Malcom MacLaren, had visited New York in the early 70s and seen the Dolls. When he got back to England, he wouldn't shut up about how great they were and tried to foist some of their ideas on the Pistols when their paths finally crossed. Johnny Rotten & Co. were having none of it and responded with the song "New York," which taunts the then-defunct Dolls with lyrics like "You poor little faggot," while Steve Jones does a pretty convincing imitation of Johnny Thunders' sneering guitar. By then, Thunders had formed his own band, the Heartbreakers (no connection to Tom Petty) and replied with "London Boys." He fires right back at Rotten by both imitating his voice and singing stuff like "You need your manager to take a piss/He holds your hand and he shakes your dick." And he does a pretty mean Steve Jones, too. The edge goes to Thunders, as well as the last word.
"Hinting and shit, d'you know what fam? I'll cut you a deal: I'll stop thinking I'm sick when you stop shouting, thinking you're Titch, bare anarchy I will bring to your bits, don't let the little badboy act fool you, if he could he would sing at the BRITs, you went from 'Ghetto Gospel' to "sing-badda-badda-badda-badda", and you think that's sick? If I was the engineer I would've unplugged your headphones, knocked off the G5 and the mixer and said, "I ain't recording this shit, d'you know what? Come out the booth you div, nah, keep the money for the session", I told them man I'll bun him in a second."
Trim just taking shots at tons of other grime MC's.
One of the greatest opening grime lines of all-time:
"I can't hate 'Pow', that was a hit, even if the main verse was nicked off God's Gift, it's been a couple years now and Sniper's still chatting shit, and whoever shanked Fumin in 2006 needs to come to Eskimo Dance so I can buy him a drink."
