so i saw some comment on the daft punk thread saying 'this band is too happy for me' and found it to be a really strange thing to say.

so i guess i'm asking;
- which do you prefer? why?
- which are you more often in the mood for?
- if you write/have written/have thought about writing music which did you write/do you write/would you write?
and anything else you might think on the very broad topic.

i imagine most on here are like me and have time for both. but if i'm being honest i think i'd lean more often towards 'happy'. i guess it's partly because i think there's enough horrors and depression and vileness in the world that a lot of the time i don't want to escape to music that reflects that. that's not to say i don't have time for sad music, i definitley do (my chart was probably about 45% happy 55% sad) but if i had to choose to erase one from the world it would be most likely be sad music.

i also think good happy music is a lot harder to write than good sad music. this is probably mostly based on when i (and others i've worked with) write songs, it's very easy to write a decent sad song - writing a decent happy song...i don't know whether anyone's ever tried but it can very very easily become cheesy. it's also easy to work interesting and strange sounds into sad music to make it work with happy music you really have to find the right spot and the right tones and everything.

i'm probably simplifying it all a bit much but you know what i mean.

edit; also i spilled water on my keyboard yesterday so now my shift key doesn't work (amongst others i'm finding out) so that's why i'm saying bye bye to capitals for a lil while.

hahahaha. it all depends on the person. I'd way rather listen to Red House Painters. Sure, they're sad, but on the most depressing of days, it makes me feel so much better. Best Coast makes me feel like crap every single time, because I can't relate to apathetic dumb fun. Best Coast is like a valley girl who goes shopping during the apocalypse.

I don't have any favourite type of music among these, but I have noticed that these days I tend to listen more to the 'happy' side of it, whereas my favourite albums tend to be sad.. I'm not sure why, but I'll venture to say it has to do with me leading a satisfactory family life now, as opposed to when I let the self-indugent 'woe is me' type take over back in the days. I used to listen to sad music more, because its cathartic qualities were more useful than now I suppose.
