A strong fixation on aura always puts me in a calm mood. I guess anything by the band Shining does this for me.

This is usually my answer to this question. I listen to sad/depressing music for the feeling of commiseration it gives when I'm feeling the same way, and I've found this to be one of the most relatable but also defiantly uplifting albums I've heard. I'm a bit biased though since it found me at a time I needed it, and I'm not sure the sense of humor on it works for everyone.

Knife Man by Andrew Jackson Jihad

That album is all over the place though, so I wouldn't really say it creates an aura. I've never really gotten into depressive black metal (though I've never really tried?) but Weakling's Dead as Dreams is a personal favorite and has some of those elements. Otherwise slowcore and the less punk side of Midwest emo are usually my go-tos for calming music. Songs About Leaving by Carissa's Wierd is super dark lyrically but the music makes it feel like a comforting hug.

Perhaps Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is the quintessence of this, in terms of striking such a potent combined/ambiguous expressive balance throughout.

Nick Drake would also do it for me, or perhaps some Nick Cave, Joanna Newsom or Leonard Cohen for those downbeat moods.

Michigan by Sufjan Stevens

Roman Candle by Elliott Smith

Among The Leaves by Sun Kil Moon

These three have helped me through the darkest times.

Tomorrow Is Nearly Yesterday And Everyday Is Stupid by Crywank
It's hilarious, self-deprecating and very sloppy anti-folk. A very honest album too. The lyrics are top notch.
