Like a lot of people, I've been thinking about Boston this week. I lived there about ten years ago, and the city introduced me to a phenomenon that is probably more common than I'd previously thought. The local radio stations played tons of Aerosmith and Boston, plus generous helpings of the Standells' "Dirty Water." It's a great song, but it doesn't really stand up to hundreds of repeated listenings.

After Boston, I moved to Chicago, where the pattern repeated itself. This time, the radio stations played unhealthy amounts of Styx (is there a healthy dosage?), Chicago, and the like. And lots and lots of "Sweet Home Chicago," which, if played right, ain't a bad song at all. But then I was introduced to "Lake Shore Drive," a truly heinous piece of soft-rock pap, played by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah (that's the band name. Funny how they never made it big). If you haven't heard it, I urge you to seek out this hippie twaddle and prepare to be bored. But the radio stations persist with it, and only because of the name.

Any other cities with theme songs that the locals revere, both rightly and wrongly? Don't give me "New York, New York," please. I lived there, too, and nobody ever played it. I never heard a lot of "Chocolate City" in Washington, either. I'm looking for regional songs that the locals actually dig.

There's a few in London, where I'm currently living ('Waterloo Sunset' immediately springs to mind), but I'd like to show some love to a lesser known gem from Birmingham, my hometown. Whenever this would get dropped at garage or grime nights, the crowd would go mental. I give you The B-15 Project (named after their postal code - or zip code, to Americans - which equates to one of my old hangouts, Harborne) featuring Jamaica's Mr. Vegas.

Massive up the Birmingham crew.
