Hey MrPink, and welcome...

I think the bulk of my chart is full of melancholy and alienation but here's a few choice cuts.

13 by Blur
Red House Painters - by Red House Painters
Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space by Spiritualized
Portishead by Portishead
Just For A Day by Slowdive
Mount Eerie by The Microphones
White Chalk by PJ Harvey

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
Arvo Part - Tabula Rasa
Godspeed You! Black Emporer - F♯ A♯ ∞
Eels - Electro Shock Blues
The Angels of Light - How I Loved You
Antony and the Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now
The Antlers - Hospice
R.E.M. - Automatic for the People

The best albums have both happy and sad moments, which I believe most of these do.

I'll second electro shock blues and How I loved you and also add:
Townes Van Zandt- Our mother the Mountain
Low- Secret Name
Suishou No Fune- Prayer for Chibi
Perfume Genius- Put your back N 2 It

For something less melancholy and more dark/dreary/angsty/hopeless:
Nico- The Marble Index
Swans- Children of God
Throbbing Gristle- D.O.A. the third and final report

Here's my favorite when i'm felling a little melancholy. It's a album all about lost love and is very sad, but For me it's like having a old friend to sit with.

Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours (1955)

Here's the 2nd track

I would choose some obvious ones: The Wall which is about isolation front and back, and Dirt which has many sad messages.
