When I saw that Alligator was Album of the Day, I literally squealed. Keep in mind, I'm in my Medical Ethics class. At any rate, I love discussing this record. It is far and away the best album The National has done. I know that most people prefer Boxer, but Boxer peaks pretty early, whereas Alligator is consistently awesome, saving the best for (almost) last. Really, it is difficult to describe The National's sound, even when it's as rudimentary as Alligator. At the same time, this is as eclectic as an album from The National gets. There are delicately arpeggiated melodies one minute, and then thrashing chords the next. Yet, there are piano driven tracks, as well as modest orchestral sections to be found as well. For every "Val Jester," there is a "Mr. November." This is also the last album where Matt Berninger really screams his lungs like it's no one's business. I'll never forget seeing The National live this summer, and trying to keep up with Berninger as he roars the coda from "Abel." Alligator has no bad songs, no awkward moments, and nothing that keeps it from being a masterpiece.

Track picks
1. Secret Meeting
3. Lit Up
8. Val Jester
9. All The Wine
11. The Geese Of Beverly Road

I agree. I love Alligator. By far my favorite by the band. Boxer felt far more controlled, as do the last two.

The first few listens weren't very convincing, but I've recently given it another chance and I wasn't disappointed. Great record, and I wouldn't be surprised if it topped Boxer for me some day.

Agreed, I have this one in my top 100, but none of the others really come close for me. They seemed to get less adventurous with their later albums.
