Regarding music, most people here are constantly looking for new music. Some are taking it in at considerable speed, perhaps even 3+ new albums everyday at times. We have many who are all about finding new music which is quite appropriate considering this is a music website.

What are we doing it for though? What is the point of it all in the long run? Do you have special reasons? You could listen to what you have got and stick with that. I could be set for life with what I have so far. On the contrary, I've heard some say they get bored of every album eventually and have to have new ones.

Well... what are your reasons? Do we need a reason for such a thing?

I like having depth, when I first started listening to music I ran my core collection of albums into the ground. Having more helps prevent that. Plus sometimes Im just not in the mood for something, so having more decreases the chances of me not being in the mood for anything.

I guess the appropriate heathen naturalist response would be to say being knowledgeable of music could ultimately be evolutionarily advantageous. For example, one could use one's extensive knowledge of music to demonstrate one's intelligence/cultural awareness and attract mates.

As much as I love the music I already know, you can't beat the excitement of discovering something you love but haven't heard before. Having fresh tunes to listen to is what motivates me most to search for new music.

This. Learning about music history, subcultures, etc. is a nice bonus, though.

I like questing to find new music, it's almost like a hobby. there's also a kind of a geeky satisfaction of knowing a bunch about music. as appealing as those reasons, nothing beats the pay off of finding new music you love.

I do it for growth as a musician. Sure, I could listen to Bruce Springsteen the rest of my life, but then the music I play might be just as limited. Thus, I strive to listen to as many different styles as I can.

I have over 4200 albums in my collection but still continue to listen to new stuff and add to my collection every week. I've been on last.fm for years constantly listening to similar artists to the ones I love and discovering new music. Yes it's an addiction but you just can't beat the thrill of finding something new that completely blows you away!
