George Martin was a genius, and a I voted for him, but I would also like to mention Martin Birch, who produced a bunch of Iron Maiden records, to great success. \m/

There's several great producers on this list, but it's hard not to go with Rick Rubin. He's produced so many great albums across multiple genres.

I am by no means an expert on music producers, but this.

He likes to downplay his role as the "fifth Beatle" because he didn't tour with them or experience first-hand the many negative consequences of Beatlemania, but their albums are nowhere near as good without him. Part of his brilliance was in balancing their creativity with his own -- guys like Phil Spector basically owned their artists and distinguished themselves by being the product. I also don't think it's a coincidence that the one Beatles album he didn't have full control over (Let It Be) was largely a bust.

I won't go as far as to say that he is the best producer of all time, though. Ask me again when I've completed my music history project. ๐Ÿ˜œ

I don't know much about producers, but two that deserve a mention are El-P and DJ Premier. El-P's production on The Cold Vein is brilliant.

Yeah, I agree with everything here, except "Let It Be" being largely a bust. I think it's a better album than one or two early ones, with some absolutely brilliant songs, but I agree that it does pale in comparison to most of their other albums. Anyway, George Martin was vital, and how lucky for us that he made The Beatles sound better than 99% of other 60s bands!

I voted for George Martin.

But I like John Leckie a lot too, who is missing from the list. He produced a couple of fantastic albums.

This. Although we all know that producers' role in hip hop is different, and some may argue more important than other forms of popular music, although I disagree with the latter viewpoint. Other very influential names would be Pete Rock, Just Blaze, The Alchemist, J Dilla and Madlib.
EDIT: btw I voted Brian Eno.
