I love the Beatles, but this is a pretty weak effort. There are a number of great songs, like the title track, YGTHYLA, and IOL, but it's another one of those movie soundtrack/filler albums that doesn't work very well for me. Loved it when I was a kid, though.

I'd say it's solid, on par with A Hard Day's Night, better than their previous albums, and worse than their following ones. Nothing too controversial.

I consider this to be their first great album.

I've always loved Help! at least this version. The U.S. was pretty awful in comparison.

You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, It's Only Love, and I've Just Seen A Face are all pretty perfect songs.

I have this fantasy of singing with a bend, doing the background vocals to Help:

When.... when I was young... I never need... help in any way
Now... these days are gone... and now I find... I've opened up the doors
Dum dum dum dum, Help me get my feet back on the ground, won't you pleeeeeeease....

Lot of great songs on this one.

Help (abovementioned)
The Night Before: the way Paul's voice glides over the lyrics: We said our goodba-ah-ah-aye....
You're Going to Lose That Girl is a fun rocking song, a bit under-rated
Ticket to Ride is one of the five best Beatles tracks, musically
Act Naturally is Ringo's best work, and so perfect for him
I've Just Seen a Face proves that they can do bluegrass when they want to. Bluegrass!

It has a couple weak moments, and ends badly (I know Yesterday was huge, but to me it's one of the dullest tracks in the all of Beatledom), but in spite of that, it's a terrific album, the last gasp of the Beatlemania style. Compared to Help! Rubber Soul was a step down while they experimented with finding a new sound.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

Oh wow, I've always thought that Yesterday is one of the most beautifully written songs of all time, both lyrically and melodically. The emotion is incredible.

Anyways, I love this album. I have a raging musical boner for The Beatles so I can never think rationally about them.

I always preferred A Hard Day's Night to this.
It has nice songs on it but it doesn't do for me too much as an album. AHDN holds better together.

I think the A-side is much better than the B. My favourite songs include Help!, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, You're Going to Loose That Girl, Ticket to Ride, I've Just Seen a Face and Yesterday.

But it was the first album on which there were two songs written by George, his songwriting started to develop (or to exist) here. I think it was a key album for George.
