Kurt Cobain
Bjork
Kendrick Lamar
Bruce Springsteen
Arthur Lee
Liz Phair
PJ Harvey (I've recently gotten into her, so we'll see if she has staying power)
Those are the ones that come to mind when I hear the word "songwriter". Not necessarily my favorite artists overall, but these are the ones I consider to be masters of songcraft.

Those are my main 5 as I have said before. They are followed by
...Neil Young, Bill Withers, Paul Westerberg, Jeff Tweedy, GZA, Ezra Koenig, Ryan Adams, Elliott Smith, Nas, Mike Ness, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, ... In basically that order.
And jut so I don't look sexist , Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell are great too.
