Excellent, excellent record. They're released 2 of my favorite records of the decade so far. I don't think it's suppose to be this, but this is easily one of the most fun albums to listen to I have.

Well I heard their latest first and, upon thoroughly enjoying it, went back to listen to their debut, so perhaps that has molded my opinion on the matter somewhat. I think their first is certainly more accessible and, whilst that isn't a bad thing in and of itself, it does lead to some predictability, particularly on songs like 'Broken Bone' and the title track. I think they just sounded like a band who were still coming into their own, a little beholden to their influences (see the Ian Curtis rip-off vocals of the opening song, the post-punk-by-numbers wiry guitar line that runs through 'Collapse', or the Bad Brains-lite thrash of 'Count Me In'), whereas on You're Nothing they really came through with a sound that was altogether more murky, more sinister and more unique to them. They sound like they truly don't give a fuck on You're Nothing, often scarily so, and I like how the songs are less immediate - I feel like I have to peel away layers of fuzz to get to the songs underneath at times, but once I have they are all the more satisfying for it. Things don't reveal themselves immediately, and I still get caught fishing around for the rhythm during the opening minute of 'Ecstasy', even though I must have heard it thirty times. Overall the record is just heavier, more confident, more dangerous. And there isn't a song that comes close to 'Burning Hand' on New Brigade. Hope that answers your question.
