could someone explain the reasons for the boss being so revered? I've never liked his music to the dismay of one of my music buddies.

I just can't stand him. i've listened to born to run, darkness on the edge of town, some of born in the usa and a little bit of his newer stuff like the rising and that other one i can't remember.

this is one of those canonical figures i've yet to appreciate, so could someone give me some insight?

edit: and yes, i have read through the lyrics. eh...

I dont know either .. Im currently going through and collecting as many albums from the rolling stone 500 albums list and im just completely swerving away from anything Bruce Springsteen. I hate the doors but im still getting all there albums, So I suppose I nothing Bruce Springsteen, I dont even know what it is specifically, but I guess I feel that he brings nothing new to the table other than paper thin musical patriotism!

I also dont care for Guns & Roses that much, and put them in the same sort of category!

Everyone has musicians they like and don't like. I feel as if everytime someone doesn't like an artist there doesn't need to be a new thread for it.

The Boss writes music for/about blue collar hard working americans. He runs shit.

Taste is subjective and all, so it might just be you. I really like bruce's lyrics, music ect., but if you dont its fine. However, i wouldnt cast the boss aside until youve heard Nebraska, its his best.

Yeah, Nebraska is definitely the gateway drug album, especially for those with an alternative or indie mindset. It's amazing to me that an artist as commercially successful as Springsteen made it. I mean it was recorded on a four-track in the early 80's and a major label put it out! Ponder that fact for a moment. I was skeptical about Springsteen for a long time too. The videos I saw on MTV in the 80's from the Born in the USA album did it, but I got into Nebraska after hearing it at my brother's, and then I met a coworker at a music museum whose favorite artist was Springsteen, and he started lending me his albums, one by one, and well, after number of listens, I became a fan of a lot of his stuff. The E Street Band takes some getting used to. I'll grant you that, especially if you love your punk rock as a love supreme seems to with his avatar. But it's the songwriting that pulls you in. If you're a fan of great uncompromising songwriters like Johnny Cash, Dylan, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Elvis Costello, etc. the more you listen, the more you will appreciate his songwriting genius, and realize that he is among that tradition and pantheon of great songwriters; however,if songwriting is not something you value highly in music, you're probably not gonna get Springsteen.

That said, I don't like everything he does. Some of it is way too slick, commercial, self-important, and even formulaic for my tastes. But the stuff that is real and emotional and genuine is truly great.

hahahaha. For real man? You should really listen to more than just the chorus of one song (I assume youre talking about Born in the USA) before you judge an artist and their lyrics[/quote]

I went through a huge Springsteen phase about 5 years ago. I listend to everything he ever did and took it all in. I don't really care for much of it anymore. I still like "The River" and "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and alot of the more carefree rockin' tracks off his box set. I also found his recent Magic to be a good listen.

Springsteen is a great showman, but he is a ham, and is his music is often overblown. I mean "Born to Run" is just as ridiculous as Meat Loaf, but "Bat Out of Hell" didn't take itself so seriously. These are just the conclusions I have come to.
