Post subject: Songs That Best Sum Up Today's Teen Culture
I need to do this thing for school. We're trying to come up with songs that best represent teens today in society, preferably a rebellious song or a cynical look at our society, though anything that's an accurate (over even melodramatic) look at today's teen culture is encouraged. It should be within about 10 years of today, the more recent the better, though teen culture hasn't changed much over the past decade. We're an overly affluent VERY white town, so maybe take that into account? IDK, it's allowed to be world wide, country wide, or specific to my hometown. My group got:
Because first world problems (country wide, maybe a little worldwide):
Lastly, and this was my idea that everyone else was kinda "eh" on, people have suggested that our generation may go down as the suicide generation, just cuz we do have SO much higher a suicide rate, and hopefully that'll stop after this generation. Anyways:
But really, we do. At the point my whole group agreed that yes, #selfie sums us up REALLY well, and 4 of the 6 of us thought it was praising "Selfie Culture", IDK ... we kinda suck. A lot.
EDIT: I should say two things. 1 This is a gross generalization of literally millions of people. I hate a lot about a lot of us, including myself, but others, including a lot of the teens here, I couldn't find anything bad to say about if I tried. I mean, how can you not like Brandon, for example? He's mature beyond his years, he's kind hearted, warm, etc. Same could be said for a lot of others, I just think he's the most mature of us to give that example of (Suede you're a close second I'd say).
2 Thank you for the posts and I will also include at the least "We Are Young", since that does sort of represent the almost 20s style of life a lot have adopted, that sort of "YOLO" situation but with a little bit of a less ... IDK arrogant undertone than a lot of other songs put it out there. Also adding on "Same Love" due to the message behind it, as a lot of us, finally a majority, believe in equal rights. _________________
Great question! I actually live in a rich white town in the Bay Area too.
I'm not really sure what you're asking. I can't tell if it's music about today's teen culture, or music that is popular in today's teen culture.
Pretty much anything from Suburbs by Arcade Fire fits for the first scenario, but especially the track Month of May.
I'd go with Macklemore and Lorde for the other one. Also maybe Happy by Pharrell.
Doesn't happen to be east bay, by chance, does it?
And the question's REALLY vague. We're supposed to find our generation's equivalent to the music of Evlis, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley ... things that either lyrically or stylistically represented the social changes, movements and/or attitudes of teenagers at the time. It's a really interesting and thought provoking assignment, but it's a little tough to really put a finger on. Not particularly familiar with Month of May, I know I've heard it once or twice but I'll have to give it another listen. Thanks! _________________

Nope, south bay actually. A town called Los Gatos, with about 30K people.

Glad to help. By the way, that's a really cool assignment. If I may ask, what class is it for? Never really gotten an assignment like that before.

Oh alright, that's where my dad went to hs. And it's for history, he's a pretty chill teacher, instead of a 50s unit we did an overlying cold war unit and are now doing a James Dean and Elvis unit. _________________
