This isn't an endorsement of the I, Claudius TV show in the video (which I've never seen outside of these clips) but rather just to give some focus to the visual/compositional art form of blocking, which reached its peak with the cinema of Orson Welles, its greatest master -- and this show appears especially influenced by his work, culminated in the likes of Citizen Kane, and (the Welles portion of) Magnificent Ambersons, and in its most baroque stylization, Touch of Evil (and don't forget Lady from Shanghai and Mr Arkadin) but also with exceptional vitality in the likes of Chimes at Midnight (almost song-like,"musical", "Mozart-ian") and Othello, and with more restraint (but not necessarily less impressive) in the likes of The Trial, which even if these are maybe a bit less personal and tend to get less notice than his masterpieces, are well worth seeking out beyond his most well known works. Other (quite different) masters can be found in the likes of Bergman, with Nykvist (Persona, Cries and Whispers, for instance) and Hitchcock (dozens of examples) and (very very different) in the likes of Tarkovsky (among many other greats), not to mention the astonishing long takes (with incredibly intricate and choreographed blocking) of Bela Tarr. _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings
I actually did get around to revisiting Not Available last night, and promptly upgraded its rating to "all time masterpiece" status (the first time its returned to 8.8+ in at least 5, probably even 10+, years). However, I don't really have anything to add to what I said above, plus Scaruffi's review, at least for the time being. All together, that should be plenty though, to get a good idea of the sort of emotional/conceptual expression going on. The album's content (both musically and lyrically) is (intentionally) very obscured and (intentionally) mysterious and symbolic rather than meant to be consumed in a completely literal sense, so I don't think it's meant to be "figured out" much further beyond the level of "symbolic allusion". It's also often times multi-interpretive (multiple levels at once), so I wouldn't get too caught up in an exact, single, clarification, or all the minute details of the lyrics and what-not -- unless you really want to. Among the many extraordinary aspects to the work is how mysterious and singular it feels no matter how many listens (while at the same time, becoming so emotionally overwhelming from such improbable content/mixture of tones). And that is part of its allure (its utter strangeness, how elusive yet potent the impact and meaning is); it's always an adventure to return to it, always both challenging and rewarding at the same time, among the most strangely powerful albums of all time (as mentioned before, sort of similar to the second half of Rock Bottom, in the sense of its utter strangeness and that it has a resultant connotation of "what is happening to me?" and "how is this even happening?" from such a unique -- at first seemingly "incoherent" -- concoction of music, the experience of which -- for both -- can be pretty overwhelming, rather miraculous, virtually like nothing else in the history of music).

Thanks DelBoca, I really like that live album. It's not "9.5-Rock Bottom" of course, but it does give an alternate take on that incredible masterpiece if it hadn't been produced/recorded/sound engineered like it was, almost as if Miles Davis' live band of the era (or maybe just Soft Machine), Wyatt on vocals, had played and recorded it instead. It really shows how much different that music can be, contextually, emotionally, atmospherically, and so on. And how crucial the production/sound engineering work was in making the proper Rock Bottom album so mysterious, "internalized/inward" sounding, in giving it such a unique sound world and intimate, inimitable feeling. _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings

I don't know about all their work, as I haven't heard everything outside of their three masterpieces and a handful of others, but yes, certainly Not Available.
The music (or the main surface melodies) are basically being "warped" from "kitsch music" into a music that is yet given a serious, classical music, almost "symphonic" treatment. The main melodies often sound like they've been taken from pop tunes or commercials (or an ironic or demented rendition of these), and what-not, but they are further complicated and warped by effects and strange additions, or added layers of sounds to harmonize or destabilize them (etc) to make them both "kitsch" on its surface, but further layered and shaped into something more otherworldly, strange, obscure.
Remember Scaruffi is reviewing the original album, not the extended one. I would only maybe add something like "heavenly artifice". In the sense that the music often has an intentional artifice to it, as if a "theatrical" rendition of the real thing, through in essence "kitsch" music. Theatrical in the sense that if you were watching a theater production of something, the backdrops, even if very interesting and artistic, would have a clear artifice to them (it might be a huge painted wall showing the background of a scene, with a painted sun and hills and trees, and paper mache birds, or something). Well, all the music, the emotional interludes, the evocations of the music, has this element. The album is evoking emotions and scenery that is artificial/theatrical in this sense, but also alluding to, symbolizing, a personal vision and reality -- just through said theatrical artifice -- through "kitsch" music that is being transformed, warped, into an ironic dichotomy between "kitsch" and "serious, classical music".
I have a general obstacle with listening to music: I have trouble not automatically associating certain sounds with certain things. For example, whenever hearing the erhu instrument, I automatically associate it with China (i.e. it evokes the feeling of being in China). But the thing about musical sounds is that they are abstract so they shouldn't automatically be assigned to certain things. Like, there are plenty of old Chinese songs that use the erhu. But obviously, every single song from ancient China isn't using the erhu to evoke the feeling of China; that would be extremely redundant. The feeling the erhu evokes depends on the context of the song.
I feel like this can delay my full understanding of what the artist is doing with certain instruments they use. Like I don't want to be always assuming the face-value purpose of the instrument (i.e., "They used x instrument and it has y tonality, so it must be trying to evoke z feeling because x instrument is often used for that purpose")... hopefully that made sense lol
The best visual analogy I could give is the color of gold in a painting. At face-value, one can assume it's automatically trying to convey wealth. But based on the individual work, it could easily be conveying something else. I just find it hard to disassociate an element with the thing that that element has constantly been associated with.
Scaruffi once said, "Zappa implicitly realized that music is a non-representational art, and that's why folksingers added lyrics to the music". But then on the other hand, when he discussed In the Court of the Crimson King, he mentions "medieval visions," which I assumed he came to that conclusion for the song based on their use of the Mellotron's sound, which to me does "automatically" sound medieval. So now I'm wondering whether or not it is "best" to automatically assume the face-value intention of an instrument's specific tonality. Maybe I'm looking too deep into this or, on the other spectrum, overlooking something.

Advice?
There are many cases where this is likely true, and there are lots of examples where it might not be. So there's not really a one-size-fits-all answer...
"How" the instrument is being played (how the notes are being played, the degree of effort applied, the space or time between notes, and so on...) can change (even by a lot) what a passage is meant to evoke (emotionally or conceptually/thematically) by itself or among a whole.
There's also the context of the instruments (and/or voice) among all other elements, which can change the intention/meaning. A mellotron among a different setting (for instance, Zombie's Odessey and Oracle) does not necessarily sound "medieval" or cohere with the other elements to form such a backdrop; rather, it sounds more "symphonic" (which is its main intention on Court of the Crimson King: to add a visionary, symphonic, epic sweep; a flight of fancy). Or, among incongruous instruments or voice, could become ironic or serve a completely different purpose. Part of the reason the mellotron conjures medieval visions has as much to do with all the other elements of that KC title track as it does the instrument alone (the lyrics are also about medieval visions, the work progresses like a "flight of fancy" or series of visions back into time, and so on...). The greater the composer, the more intentional the work, the more likely each part is aligned to a common goal, an overall vision -- and there is a very good chance that all elements and the overall ambition are going to be aligned and thoroughly developed in cohesion, emotionally/conceptually (obviously some works are more "chaos" than "order" and intentional "disorganizations", anarchies of coherence, but I just mean "on average" and "most of the time"). And one can use that to put the pieces together, starting from what one is most sure about, and fitting the rest together, from there. In short, start with what you KNOW or are most sure about. And try and form a coherent emotional and conceptual alignment of elements from there, through revisit(s), "if A is conveying X, then B is probably conveying Y" (and seeing if that works while listening). Of course, the more Dada-ist or Surrealist or fantastical, the more challenging that might be (because it is less immediately coherent with "reality"), so it may not always immediately occur to one what everything in a work is all about. It also helps to have done the same thing in other arts. For instance, going through a lot of great films and paintings can help one more quickly understand music, more able to form the "musical picture". Experience in any art tends to help one more quickly and efficiently "assimilate" with another one. _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings

NOTE: This is not a list that is ordered exclusively by how funny the films are (absolute funniest at the top, least funny at the bottom). It is more accurate to say it is a list of the best films where comedy (including black or darker comedies, comedic-satires, and so on...) happens to be a major genre/theme of the selection, listed in order by their overall quality (as in my overall criteria: emotionally, conceptually, creatively). It would also be more accurate to say that the higher on the list, the more ingenuity and meaning the comedy will tend to have on average. There are some films (lower on the list) that have made me laugh harder than some, or even most, of the films higher on the list. However, the films in the higher rankings are more significant experiences, better overall films (usually in more ways beyond comedy alone) and their comedy, even when it is not being "laugh-out-loud" funny, tends to have more ingenuity, more meaning, provoke more thought or even a greater multitude of feelings, emotions, reactions than just laughter. And it will tend to be more permanently watchable, to remain compelling after countless revisits, with fewer (if any) diminishing returns.

There are many cases where this is likely true, and there are lots of examples where it might not be. So there's not really a one-size-fits-all answer...
