New PG Six is great if you're into that. I am.
New Slowdive is boring.

Say it ain't so!
I wouldn't call it "boring," but there's no image cut on it like "Star Roving" from the previous album, and there's nothing with a nice radio-friendly pop hook like "Sugar for the Pill" either (not that I ever heard that song on radio myself, but I heard a couple of podcast episodes devoted to it, so someone must have liked it). The closest thing is probably "Kisses," but it's nowhere near as grabby.
Also, there's more drum-machine usage and more synths in general, which is slightly disappointing. And less reverb, which might upset some of their old-guard fans... I even heard a couple of quite audible bum notes in there that weren't fixed in post, which isn't terrible, but I was nevertheless a little surprised to hear them.
It's still my choice for AotY, but okay, sure, it could've been better.

Guts is full to the brim with bangers. Probably will be AOTY. I can’t see another album topping this. _________________ There are children who are so unwell

craola wrote: | isn't that their calling card? | That's an interesting question really — it's been 28 years or so since Pygmalion came out, which is enough time that the band has been able to write their own history somewhat. There was a big article in Paste a couple of weeks ago that really soft-pedals the whole story, but the fact remains that if you were a fan of theirs at the time, like I was, you might very well have been hugely disappointed, and maybe a little pissed off too. And this would have been after Souvlaki, IMO one of the greatest albums of all time in any genre, was so unfairly slagged by the British music press in 1993 that the label postponed the US domestic release for almost 6 months (and insisted on adding that cover of "Some Velvet Morning" at the end too, thinking that would give it more "hit potential").
Compared to that, most complaints about Everything Is Alive feel kind of trivial and silly. But despite what the guy from Paste says, after repeated listens I still can't shake the conclusion that it's weaker than the last album.

It's not the sort of thing I usually go in for, but so far I like it a lot better than the most recent Weyes Blood and Paramore albums at least.

I don't know what to do anymore. My chart is overstuffed. There is no more room. It is like a very good pączki.

All Around You by Subsonic Eye
Subsonic Eye are back with their Lost In Translation soundtrack core material.
Singapore's dream pop scene is is ridiculous. Should apply for UNESCO.

The King by Anjimile
Anjimile's new to the scene— 60% Perfume Genius / 30% Sufjan Stevens / 10% something folksy-industrial-psych-art-pop-ish.
It's a bit of a hodgepodge, but it's a very good hodgepodge. Surprised it's kinda flying low. Good work.

Sardines by Apollo Brown & Planet Asia
Speaking of flying low, Apollo Brown has opened up another can of fish.
This is not canned fish from the 24/7 bodega. This is that Spain/Portugal artisanal stuff.
Really nice beats— needs some better verses from time-to-time, but overall it's a very crisp album.
Beats range from jazz-rap to drumless to more of a 00s-esque chipmunky sound, but it's all surprisingly cohesive.
Probably Apollo's best project since As God Intended.

BB/ANG3L by Tinashe
This EP (album?)— whatever— is the best I've ever heard Tinashe... by a lot.
Think we got 20-ish minutes here, and it's a triumph of modern pop. Really lush, smooth, cool, tight— there's a bit of extra pride here that I haven't heard in her work before. I think she knows she's finally onto something. Talk to Me Nice is one of my favourite tracks of the year. The sound she's concocted is just so... enjoyable. Somewhere between Twigs, Rihanna and Kelela.

Chrome Dreams by Neil Young
Alright, alright— this isn't '2023' music— but I hope people don't skip it. Shelved at somepoint or another for whoknowswhy, Neil Young's popular 70s bootleg Chrome Dreams was officially released last month. It feels like Neil Young has been releasing some archival or live somethingorother monthly for the past few years, an it's been a bit of an oversaturation, but this is well worth it. Top-tier for him, and would have surely been destined to be a classic.
MEANWHILE— In jazz world—

Resolve by Arnold Dreyblatt
(Sure— this is jazz. Yeah. I think.)— whatever it is, it's awesome.

An Ever Changing View by Matthew Halsall
This is definitely jazz. A balloon of jazz.

Bewitched by Laufey
Yes! Believe it or not, this is also jazz. It is TikTok jazz. And it is as jazzy as a TikTok can get. Icelandic-Chinese via LA vocal jazz. Yes.

Shades Of Rainbow by Miki Yamanaka
This is also jazz. Played on a piano. With a couple empty glasses of topshelf gin at a topstorey bar in Tokyo.

Come With Fierce Grace by Alabaster DePlume
Hmm... yes, I suppose this is also jazz. There is a saxophone.

Come Around And Love Me by Jalen Ngonda
And this isn't jazz at all, but it's certainly neat. Jalen Ngonda's gone classic smooth soul, and it sounds nice. It's an exciting debut— something special here— but I hear room to grow. Looking forward to seeing his next steps. Call it whatever you want— revival, throwback, a... recreation? But whatever you want to label it, it's hard to admit it's not good. Hope BEA gives it a spin.

Shelter by Alice Phoebe Lou
And this isn't jazz at all. Bedroom pop/indie folk. Gorgeous. With all this hype behind so many of her contemporaries with a similar sound, it's a shame thinking this could get lost in the jumble. Really lovely album.

The Sky Is The Same Colour Everywhere b...i Diabaté
And this is... well, there's a concept of jazz here. Iran meets Mali, kora w/ kamancheh.
 Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.
Absinthe by Whobejazzz & Tenten
And yes! This is jazz. Because it's by Whobejazz. So it's jazz. Zimbabwe meets Nigeria— chill jazz neo-soul (think Badu-ish). Ace.
Jelly. So much jelly. Everywhere.

The only bad thing about the new Mitski is that prime music shuffles in a bunch of Hozier for no reason. I feel like 2023 is starting to pick up musically. Sufjan on the way too and the lead single is excellent. _________________ There are children who are so unwell

Le Jour Et La Nuit Du Réel by Colleen
And it's my new #1. Modern classical-ish (think Satie maybe?) electronic lullaby vignettes that are constantly superb.
Also, new Tirzah is very good. There was a possible way out for Trickyish trip-hop after all. And it doesn't sound like trip-hop at all, it does sound like Tricky anyway. Or Topley-Bird 3.0 Or Dean Blunt. If they all did trap-ish repetitive (same exact beat all over the record) post-whatever-comes-after-whatever-comes-after Burial stuff.
