While I appreciate my bloody valentine for being one of the most daring and unique musicians ever I will always listen to slowdive a lot more because of how their tone resonates within me. loveless may be the better album but it can be too much to comprehend. it sometimes makes you want to close yourself and resist the sound rather than embrace it and it takes strength to open up an let the music come to you.
with souvlaki it comes a lot easier. it fills every void in your mind and makes you feel comfortable rather than disoriented.
you can criticise slowdive for only going half the way and not for the whole thing but in it's way it predated some post rock bands by 10 and dream pop bands like beach house by nearly 20 years. after seeing the pitchfork doc you realize how personal this album really is and why it hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves at the time.
with alison and dagger you got two examples of how great a songwriter neal halstead is and when the sun hits is the best song to come out of the whole dream pop genre to this day

Such a great album. These guys are really underrated. This album can't touch Loveless, but it gets pretty damn close. Definitely check it out. Easily beats In Utero for best album of '93

After two listens I'm already convinced it pushes out Loveless as my #1 shoegaze record...

Wow. Just wow. My love for all things metal in my tender years sadly pretty effectively narrowed down what kinda music I could enjoy listening to at that time.

And that my friends is truly one of the sorriest things in life. I hate to use a term transcending here but this really was sort of a transcending experience for me - maybe it will be for you too (particularly if you suffer(ed) from the same disease as myself all those eons ago).

Shoegazing definitely fits the description here but in a positive sense. Stone Roses had an outstanding tune, "I Wanna Be Adored", but other than that, more or less meh. My Bloody Valentine? Sorry, didn't do anything for me.

I urge you to give this album a chance.
