This article was put up on cracked.com today: http://www.cracked.com/article_18500_th...tards.html

Thought I would share it with you and possibly talk about artists who you suspect 'might' have stolen stuff for their albums Razz [/url]

the rhythm section on these is pretty much identical. same driving bass, same drum pattern, same sounds.. almost the same chord sequence too! i actually prefer the bat for lashes song though.. much better.

Great article! I usually hate when critics talk about musical theft because its usually a vague melodic similarity, or even worse, based on "feel" or "groove". I've always known about "Echoes" and "Phantom" (the clip didn't even play the most criminal part) but I almost spit out my brewsky when I heard that Spirit song! I mean, it sucks when anyone rips off your song, but when that song turns out to be the most played and revered song in classic rock radio...I'd be following Jimmy Page's kids to school.

Everyone hates Metallica for Napster, so it is funny seeing the shoe on the other foot. I'm not really as convinced with the Metallica allegations though... sure James admitted the one rip-off, but i think the "Enter Sandman" example is a rather common musical motif using a 1 and a b5 note- you can hear it even in 60's spy movies. It's the METAL behind it that really makes it Metallica's own.

The funniest part to me was the Jazz "Smoke on the Water" because I have a long running nerd joke with the guys in my band where we play uber-macho hard rock riffs using horribly pretentious jazz chords- and Smoke on the Water is a classic. Prophecy fulfilled.
