The Murder Capital are unfortunately underrated in the post-punk revival scene of recent years. This album is simply a masterpiece, and I can't understand why it isn't on everyone's lips. Tracks like Crying, Ethel, We Had to Disappear and Gigi's are wonderful on all counts.

In a context where peers have been more radical, Murder Capital render another intriguing but predictable work. There's some Moon Shaped Pool influences going on, and later tracks like the eponymous Gigi's Recovery borrow from the Strokes in rather obvious ways, but even when you can't pin down a sound's origin point, there's a pervading sense of heard-it-all-before; Why are we writing these songs still? Have we not done it all? What is Post-Punk Revivalism about really?

Ironically, there's something within Murder Capital's work that suggests an answer: This remains a fun listen, even as it's not some masterstroke or revolutionary statement. there's a lot of great songs here and the band have a near perfect grasp of guitar tone. There's clearly a lot of competency at work here, and on tracks like Crying, Ethel and The Lie Becomes the Self, the band come into their own. The songcraft is meticulous.
