Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 24% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.8/100, a mean average of 74.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.0.

A friend recently sold Amaarae to me as a "sociopathic dance queen" and I can't say I'm disappointed after listening to 'Fountain Baby' in its entirety.

“Fountain Baby” really comes into its own in the second half. Amarrae switches from primarily rapping to singing with great effect. Her personality is able to come out stronger in the music. The first half is carried by the vibrant afro beats, but the lyrics feel like a sapphic take on contemporary hip-hop clichés. “Counterfeit” is a notable exemption with the hilarious line “Me and my bitch got matching titties”. “Sex, Violence, Suicide” has a fantastic transition from a somber R&B song to a pop punky outro. Slow start, but a great finish.

Basically she played this record as her ACL setlist. I had heard this record several times prior to the show. Almost no one showed up, and it was a mostly electronic set, but it convinced me of this artist's brilliance. They actually had a decent mix compared to other mid-day live music artists tbh, and there was just this sense from hearing those songs performed live that we were witnessing the early rise of a really talented songwriter.

She really does have a nice voice, it's very processed, but it's a nice tone. The quality of the songs are just over the top the rhythms are quite prominent and feature a variety of beat types. This would appeal to fans of SZA Tinashe or FKA Twigs, or more broadly: Rihanna, Beyonce, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj. The African-inspired beats (they are very very good) are addictive to listen to. I also feel like there's some stylistic overlap with reggaeton in the rhythmic cadences.

One of the most fun and surprising pop albums in recent years. Amaarae has the goods.
